Realistic Ammo Counts

Post by Gran »

In reality, a 30rd mag is rarely loaded with 30rds due to feed problems and jamming issues. IRL a 30rd mag is loaded with about 28rds. Just an idea to add to the realism even more. I personally like to load the last 5rnds to be fired as tracers, that way I can quickly tell when I'm about out of ammo.

I suppose so, no idea how the marines are army do it but I know in the Air Force still load 30. We never had a problem with it at the range 8) but then again I was never in a combat situation with sustained fire.

Doesn't that backfire sometimes though? What if someone surprises you suddenly and you have exactly those five tracers left... your just gona unload the traces into him. Do traces damage people?

Small, brightly-burning metal pieces travelling at a few hundred meters per second? 'Course they don't. ;)

No. A tracer is burning, so it constantly is losing mass, unlike a bullet, so it performs differently. Certain recoilless rifles and rocket launchers have spotting rifles attached that fire tracers that have been "ballistically matched" to have the same flight performance as those weapons.

28 rds I like, the whole spring in the clip argument, but tracers are a harder buy, for this reason:

if the last 5 rounds are tracers for everybody... then everyone is gonna know that tracers = that guy is out of ammo, rush him.

Won't matter, I'm never alone anyway. Let them rush. With tracers loaded as every third round, incomeing fire from multiple targets, I highly doubt anyone would even notice. If the standard loadout is a tracer every third rnd, then for every tracer you see there are three other rounds you don't. Seeing five tracers would just make you think that 15 rnds have flew over head.

if you want tracers play allied intent that is insane with the number of tracers flying around.

On a side note, many LRRP patrols in Nam used mags loaded completely with tracers as noted in "Phantom Warriors: Book 1". Since they were usually outnumbered and would attempt to break contact at all costs, the tracers gave the enemy the impression of a larger force. It caused the enemy to think twice that they were engaged with a 7 man recon team and instead faced an entire platoon. Note that these men were running for there lives on many occasions and just laying down suppression to hold the enemy back untill they could reach an LZ.

Oh by the way aks and m16s should have 7 clips each, that is total as the code counts the one attached to the weapon, so 6 clips in the pouches. Don't know if they are carrying more currently in Iraq etc, but also depends on the carrying pouches for the AK, differs alot there are satchel pouches and belt ones aswell. But would be nice not to run out of ammo even when you try and conserve your ammo.

Well three Mags for a Medic is just not enough. A medic in a combat role, as is in the game, would carry his Med gear on top of a full combat load. At least he'd be packing 6 mags (personally I'd rather see 10), I know that's what CLS's and the Medic do in my unit.

basic combat load is 7 mags. I carried 11. All with 30 rounds of ammo, and I usually carried a spare for my first mag, so I could have 30 plus 1 in the chamber. Never had a jam. Clean your gun regularly and you'll have no problems.

As for tracers, my first round, and my last 3 were tracers.

Same here. But if you give more ammo, I think you should have your run time reduced. It just goes hand in hand.

works for me. maybe if you gave regular soldiers more ammo, then the resupply bags could be made un-droppable to balance out the amunition.
