Language Barrier

Post by Rafik_63 »

Hey there guys, this is my first post so hopefully I'm not gonna **** it up too much.....anywho here it goes...

So far we've got the MEC and Iraqi insurgents speaking arabic (pretty much perfect actually) we've got the chinese speaking Mandarin, the Brits and the Americans speaking english (with their bolt on cheesy accents) so far so good. With the introduction of Taliban insurgents are we going to use Pashtu or maybe farsi for them? Obviously its not way up there on the priorities list, who knows the devs in their infinite glory have probably already thought of this, but i know I'd hate to see the insurgency faction be made into generic Islamo-bombers speaking just arabic. Id be more than happy to help out if any is needed, i speak a bit of both pashtu and Farsi as well as arabic (which im fluent in) i guess we've already got them for MEC, unless you wanted me to do raw Iraqi slang for the iraqi insurgency? Just a thought anyways

Well, hopefully they will. Not everyday you find someone who speaks Pashtu. Adding some variety to the Arabic-speaking forces would also be great!

Just curious. Where are you from? I take it that Arabic is your native language (since you say you speak it without problems) but how come you speak Farsi and Pashtu as well? IIRC they really aren't that similar (from what I've heard of arabian and iranian friends). :)

You'd be suprised how much working in a take-away will teach you  the farsi though, is more through friends I'm also going to study it at Uni in september. Yeah Farsi is actually spoken in parts of Afghanistan (mostly by the middle-class in Kabul and in the western regions). I'm not too sure but i reckon Pashtu is an Indo-european language, Urdu is and a hell of alot of afghani's speak it so I'd reckon from that, that it is. Arabic is semitic so completely different to the other two, which is pretty interesting given where they are. And as for where I'm from....well I'll leave you to guess for a bit and see if you get it....

lol, take-away? ^^

And, yes, I knew Pashtu is a Indo-European language. So is Farsi and (IIRC) Kurdish. They are all quite similar.
Guessing that you are from an Arabian speaking language. Working at a take-away can probably teach you alot, but not to speak fluent Arabic...

Looking forward to hear your voice in-game, btw. :)

Pashto would be preferable. Not farsi, although it would be close to some extent to what they speak in Northern Afghanistan: Dari.

Farsi is actually spoken in the western provinces of Afghanistan, its also spoken in Kabul by the middle class almost exclusively, it is in the Dari (only a dialect mind you) form in the more rural areas, pashtu is probably the best option though like you said. I can't imagine Taliban fighters communicating in farsi , although many of them probably have the knowledge to do so, i reckon pashtu would be pretty accurate. Thats what alot of the troops being sent that are being sent out there are taught and what most of the interpreters are speaking and what alot of military intelligence is being gathered in. Should be good though, can't wait to get all this moving in-game.

Taliban doesn't mean they are Afghanian fighters. Taliban is made up many nations, so the proper would be to have a mix of languages for them.

However for Afghani maps with insurgents, I'm guessing the majority would be Afghani.

Taliban does pretty much mean exclusively afghani fighters, that and maybe a few sypmathisers from pakistan. The Taliban is not made up of many different nations. Al Qaeda are a group that are allied with the Taliban however the only cross between forces is in the form of something called the 055 brigade which was a sort of specialised guerrilla force comprised of experienced foreign mujahideen used to back up Taliban units initally during the invasion in 2001(some were used seperate units), i think they were integrated into the Taliban army in the mid 90's.
