Flares

Post by Wicca »

Hi!

This is my Suggestion:

I want flareguns for Engineer (or medic) and the officer class.

Reason? well, i want to be able to cover Transport helicopters when they land, they give out a heatsource.

And if its a night map, maybe it can iluminate the ground?

Also it gives you a new chance of tactics ingame, like if you are going to attack the enemy, and you have one engineer to your right, shooting his flare into the air, the enemy squad gets alerted by that one guy. And then you have the element of surprise from another angle, since people are so concentrated on the flare.

That and also it gives you a new way of improvising combat in PR.

I like the ability to improvise, and use "Different" Tactics to overcome the enemy.

So, what do you guys think? Is the flaregun something we should try or not?

i like the idea, I played the tacktical advance mod today, and thought about the possibility, because of the way the modder developed the nuke effect. The huge plum it gives of and the bright flare up, if the devs could downsize it, and make alittle more realistic ( and no damage unless similar to molotov) it could take the spot. Or it could just be fireball wars, and a bunker would become a concreate coffin. And i'm also no good at dev, and dont know if it is possible

Does that actually work IRL?

Flareguns would be cool, but at what distance would they be visible?

They use it in the norwegian Army at night, i have heard so many stories of platoons, securing an area, then staying at one place for a week, then they get attacked at night and flares gets shoot up, guns blazing, and yeah pretty crazy stories.

Wait, the M203 can fire Flares. But does it give a heat Source? Or signature or whatever you say?

The Battleracer mod has a flare gun in it. So, yep, it's possible.

I'd like to see illume rounds for mortars. But then we'd need night maps.

using it to defend against IR missiles is a little far fetched.

Flare (countermeasure) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

"A (decoy) flare is an aerial infrared countermeasure to counter an infrared homing ("heat seeking") surface-to-air missile (SAM) or air-to-air missile (AAM). Flares are commonly composed of a pyrotechnic composition based on magnesium or another hot-burning metal, with burning temperature equal to or hotter than engine exhaust."

Is the Flare shoot from the ground hoter than an helicopter exhaust?

Well if there is someone with a AA rocket, try to shoot a flare 500 m away, see what happends :P

This is IRL plausible, a friend of mine required all his guys to carry two star clusters in their kit out the gate. These are simple flares, cap is the firing pin and you hit it on a hard surface and you have a single. Not much more than that though.
RedRusky wrote:whats the difference from a plane flare, compared to a flare gun flare, obviously downsized right? but what else?
Aircraft flares are going to burn a lot hotter than a flare gun flare, and much hotter than a star cluster. If you look at footage of aircraft deploying flares you see they deploy multiple flares. If you just fired one the missile might track the decoy but chances are it would reacquire the aircraft.

Sorry Wicca don't think this would work to decoy missiles but it would be a nice signal. If you want something to make the enemy look the other way in PR just throw your officer smoke grenade in the other direction. Im sure the enemy would be thinking "WTF green smoke  "

Well, can you add Flaregun anyway, so i can shoot it to confuse the enemy?

I mean, tactics is very important in PR and its what makes it fun, and i enjoy it alot, but i dont like using the same tactic for every situation, on the same map over and over again.

So it would be cool to like, make like a SL VS SL, the best SL wins, because he has the best strategy.

Besides, who here would not want to shoot flares at eachother?

Officer kit is low on slots. There is just not enough free space for a flare gun.

Haven't heard of flare pistols (like the kind seen most often in movies to blow up spilled fuel) actually being used on ops by infantry or engineers, but single-use star cluster or parachute flares (you just whack them on the non-burning end) are often used. US aviators have a reusable flare "pen-gun" (issued with red flares only) in their survival kit; there is a pen flare signaling kit issued with several different colored flares, but you don't often hear or see mention of that.

As said, the officer and engineer kits are already full-up. I could see pyrotechnic rounds for the grenadier if more night maps are created, maybe, but otherwise, this could only really apply to pilot kits.
