Mini-Mini-Map

Post by ZanderArch »

As of .756, infantry have lost their mini-maps. I agree with the removal to an extent. The total removal of the infantry mini-map just doesn't seem like a good idea to me.

Why not return it as a limited aspect. The original BF2 map was a large circle. The earlier versions of PR had the Square Garmin GPS mini-map. The reduction in size and/or shape has shown that my suggestion is possible.

So, my suggestion: Return the mini-map as a much smaller HUD element. Something equal to the thumbnail of the first person view's hand. This would allow you to quickly check the location of teammates without taking your eyes off your view field. This would definitely ease the wrists of most players who like to keep an eye on their surroundings at all times. The small size of the HUD element would limit it's ability as a massive map, requiring use of the M map to do any major navigation. But, it would still be large enough to help with navigation.

Now, since this is Project Reality, most suggestions do need something to back them up realistically. As with most of the limitations of the BF2's engine, many things act as metaphors to their real life counterparts. The mini-mini-map would act as the soldier's senses displayed by a visual representation. This would also supplement the inability to shoulder tap to signal squad movement. Among other things that can't be "felt" through a mouse and keyboard from a video game.

Minimalistic mini-map for infantry. Have at it.

Maybe one that doesn't have a terrain background and only shows the relative position of your squad members.

Well, even tho whole map is a bit off realistic, the delay should be more than a second, you should have to point the map to north and position of other people should change every 10 seconds or so, or via comm rose with an option to say your position and untill you say it, the marker would stay at the starting point...

Nah life is good without any form of minmap the only problem with the game factor is not having peripheral vision, but you've still got markers on the edges of your screen indicating SMs positions
It's quite easy to check where your squad mates are by flicking the mouse to one side.

You should be organised enough to know where each other should be a squadleader should tell someone or two people to go up front and some far back right and left and someone watching the rear, stay organised and youll know where everyone is.

Actually, is it possible to give everybody in every passenger seat of every vehicle a standard mini-map? This could be used to represent the current Blue Force-style GPS networks that would be used by every faction by the time PR takes place.

We'll get used to it. Not having a map to look at all the time will make us better players.

there is only one Blue force per vehicle, so having passengers be able to use it would be unrealistic, not to mention unnecessary. Passenger dont do anything in vehicles and the only thing they can do is open there map.

Mine's binded to \ right next to z which is zoom map for me. map set to 20% opacity. There's no need for mini maps or mini mini maps...

@ OP: Situational awareness is the key. If there are friendly squads near you, take note of their position, direction, etc... If you check your map every minute or so, you shouldn't have a problem knowing where the rest of your team is. When you spot the enemy near a friendly squad, tell your squaddies that there's friendlies in the area. If you are diverting from the rest of your squad, for whatever reason, tell them which direction you're moving in and why. etc..

Seriously, communication!!! Use it and you won't (think) you'll need the magic radar...

yeah, like a small, blurry field in the top right corner with squadmembers and squadleader. no background or anything.

Realistic? No.

Needed? No.

Things to clutter up the lovely, nearly empty (realistic) H.U.D. No.

Just... NO!

I can understand it realistically on some vehicles but as Coderedfox pointed out, we don't want things stuck to our eyes.
