Good news, cos I agree with what Deadboy says, but without it you get the odd idiot that'll just stand uncovered in the middle of battle shooting with no regard for his "life". I'm sure you get some mentalists in the armed forces, but people like that must be pretty few and far between.

The thing is, it's also about trying to simulate bullets kicking up dust/dirt into your face. Using a shader effect to do this allows us to simulate the whole "squinting" reaction without killing everyones frame rates.
Hopefully the tweaks coming in 0.8 will help get that message across (i.e: you wont become crippled when one round lands nearby)

omg thats such good news.. i would always get pissed off when one tiny round lands nearby and my whole squad goes blind..
