Re: Trip flares
I don't like the flares at the moment, as they are very hard to set up in the right pace (user error) and not very flare like.
i liked the ones that where in the wookie sniper mod, that shot a flare very very high into the air n it was bright white with a little pop sound.

As it is now, the current effect only notifies enemy soldiers of a sniper's presence, and rarely does it notify the sniper himself unless he's looking in that direction anyway. Those arguing that a more visible flare would compromise the sniper's location ignore the fact that so does the current flare, only it does not notify the sniper but his enemies instead.
I agree.
As for the claymore thing though, doesn't it say right at the top of the page and in a diagram that the US has not signed that treaty?

Re: Trip flares
Half a second of suppression effect to the trip flare's surrounding area is a good idea, so is the flashbang since that is noticeable even outside the very limited bf2 field of vision but probably the simplest idea is to increase the volume of whatever sound file is attached to the flare going off

Re: Trip flares
I would like to see something like those flares in the Wookie sniper mod (Atleast in the earlier versions). They actually shoot up in the air and are pretty visible from a distance.

Throw C4 near it and wait for the flare's skull to go away.

Re: Trip flares
I'd like too see some tripflares given out to the ordinary rifleman too.
Like if you are going to defend a newly capped flag you deploy some tripflares so you know where the enemy is coming from and when. Though you shouldn't having it deploy a huge cloud of smoke (covering the enemy movement) but more of a rocket as described earlier.
And if you let the unscoped rifleman have it, it would make that kit much more attractive to the common soldier and squad more than just beeing cappable of carrying a little more ammo than the other.

Re: Trip flares
Another good way to use the current flares is to set them in a position to "bait" some one into investigating the area. As a sniper on Al Basrah this should work out nicely, god knows when an insurgent finds those flares they'll look high and low for that prize

Re: Trip flares
Why not replace the flares with a proxy trip? Allow me to explain:
If you have a security system, you probably have a motion sensor for the alarm. Why not make a personal sized one. You place it like the flare, and it has the same range as the flare...but with a slightly different effect. Once tripped, it will blink a visible red light that can be seen by both teams (so if the enemies catch this blink they will know they are spotted, if they don't they are at a disadvantage), this will then send a audio signal to the sniper (maybe a series of 5 distinguishable beeps) to warn the sniper that that area is breached. If the sniper is covering a team with it, he just VOIP's to the squad that that spot has movement.
It's not unrealistic so it could work, just coding would be the hard part.

Re: Trip flares
Claymores were great the way they were in 0.5. Unlike vanilla you had to manually detonate those just like C4.
I would love to see claymores given to the unscoped rifleman. 1 claymore to start with a maximum of 8 just like mines are now. Would be great for defending flags.
Btw, i dont think this was banned, as long as its manually detonated i dont think it counts as a mine.

Re: Trip flares
Indeed, Trip flares are utterly useless right now...
Trip wires stretch to cover much wider areas and are setup in much larger quantities irl... They aren't a 5ft long sex whip sticking out of a smoke grenade whos only real use is guarding a ladder.
As a sniper you cant really use them to cover your rear because if you're smart you'll relocate then Oh teh noes, You have no more flares
??: and god help you if the enemy comes at you from the side
They cant be used as they are irl to cover an entire section to warn of an enemy advance because the sex whip simply isn't long enough, AND you have to be looking in the direction of the flare to notice... In short you're more often watching the guy as he walks over the flare, to see a warning come up from a flare that theres a guy walking over the flare.... Despite the fact you need to look at the flare to know he's there in the first place, Like I said you're looking at the flare anyway so you already know he's there, if anything all the flare does is let him know that you know he's there... Pointless...
And that's if you're lucky enough for this geezer to walk within your 5ft sex whip radius out of a 150ft arc from the compass bearing
The model looks like utter **** and its use is limited to doors an ladders, NOTHING like the way real trip flares are used.
Forgive my bluntness, I absolutly despise this item and have no idea why it's there, the intentions are good but as it is right now its a WIP that shouldnt even be in the mod right now , it has no relevance to RL the way it's employed and just looks a total shambles compared to the rest of the mod
Any halfwit can easily see the "wire" sticking out RL trip wires are super thin and usually come in two colours for even better camoflauge, they rarely use a great big black thick kinky whip because it's so dam visible
I love every aspect of this mod but these things I despise, They are an abomination. They look awful, Have little or no function at all, they add nothing to the gameplay and they're nothing like irl, they are truly terrible, they do not fit with PR at all and just look like a permenant glitch or like someone's made a mistake...
/Rant Ends
Sorry bout that, not like me to go off on a hating spree, but trip flares are just stupid as they are right now utterly stupid... fegging trip flares.. WHY??? whats the point when they dont act as a real trip flare!!!! GAAARGH!!!! really gets to me... they're terrible... ok I'm done

Hey! At least I was right about the purpose of these things! To alert enemy troop movement in an area instead of guarding your rear like the claymores are used in BF2

The more effective and noticable it is, the further away you can place it which is what a sniper wants with that long rifle and all, close combat with a moments notice is not much use
