HUD: Less is More

Post by GeZe »

[the goal is realism, and technically the HUD would be most realistic without anything at all, but you needthings for the game. The goal of this is to remove things that aren't critical for the game]

The Sprint Meter:
PR removed the health meter becusae they added effects that show the player that they are low on health without needing the bar. The thing is, vBF2 had such effects for sprint already (heart beat etc.), also, sprint isn't that important, you don't need to know exactly how much sprint you have. There is no reason to keep the meter, it should be removed.

Messages:
I think that the 'Amo Here!', and any 'Enemy Spotted' chat messages should be removed. All they are is spam, they actually hinder the player from seeing more important messages.

Mini Map:
The mini map is nowhere near as important in PR then in vBF2 as there is no UAV. I think it should be removed from the normal view, but the bigger one that you get when you press M(?) should be kept, it simulates a soldier looking at a computer or map.

Amo:
Realistically, a soldier would see how much amo he has by looking down and seeing how many clips he has. As this is impossible with this engine I suggest just removing the numbers and showing a small picture of a clip at the bottom right hand corner. If he has 3 clips, it would show 3 small pictures of a clip (or grenade etc.) This is closest to just looking down.

the map is kinda needed, for direction as well as spotting. it also helps decrease FF accidents

Until a realistic duration for sprinting can be made as well as heavy breathing when you are to exausted to sprint further are added I think the sprint meter should stay.

I agree that these messages should be done away with.

I like the minimap just for spotting purposes, granted though, this isn't exactly realistic. I think you're right in saying it should be done away with. Instead, mic's should be much more encourages as well as voip/teamspeak in squads. If this could be done, spotting would be much more realistic.

As for the ammo thing, I don't think it's needed. A number is just as good as a drawing in my book. I think that the dev's have more important things to work on then such cosmetic things.

I think the Ammo Here messegas should be kept beacuse it alerts you to the fact there is ammo around espically if you have ingame voulme turned down for TS. However everything definalty can go.

The mini-map is needed for the most part. Normally before an attack you normally know where you are going. However, we have no luxury as to planning our attacks. It helps players to navigate maps much easier. Otherwise you might end up walking off the map.

Sprinting. Meh, I don't know. In real life you know when your about to stop. Technically just jogging around on the map should take away from your overall stamina. I think it sohuld stay. If not, I hope the devs come up with some real good huffing and puffing sounds.

Other than that I don't mind.

best would be to contsrict people to saying only one of the same message in a row. but I don't think that's possible

Getting rid of the mini-map is a pretty sweet idea. This ain't GRAW, people.

The Sprint Meter:
It only pops up when you are sprinting and goes away as you "catch your breath" i think its fine the way it is, smaller coudl be better though.

Messages:
yes i fully agree, hearing people say it in game is enough, i think people are capable of looking at the ground for ammo =)

Mini Map:
The mini map is nowhere near as important in PR then in vBF2 as there is no UAV. I think it should be removed from the normal view, but the bigger one that you get when you press M(?) should be kept, it simulates a soldier looking at a computer or map
-soldiers sit htere and memorize maps of the terrain, so i think the minimap is realistic, they know what buildings are supposed to be where, and IRL instead of saying "enemy spotted" youd really say "enemy near building Echo Tango 5" or.... something like that haha. so i think the current set up if fine. plus it wuld be a pain if someone spots a target and you gotta look at your map =/ , it would be a bummer.

Amo:
I think the numbers are fine, i agree with lonely jew.

About the ammo thing: In reality I have two holes in the back of my magazines. The topmost is when there is approximately 10 bullets left, and the lowest is when there is approximately 20 bullets left. By simply turning my rifle, I have an idea wether I am low on ammo and should change the mag now, or wether I should keep going a bit longer before stopping my partner so he can secure me while I reload.

I do not know if american magz have a similar way of showing how much ammo there is left, but if they do, this should maybe be added at some point as a sort of status indicator.

why not have.. erm resident evil style health bars with Fine, Injured and Critical? but the medics can see how much health you have as normal, but they have to be close to you or something.

About the Minimap, I dont really care if its taken away or not. I just want a compass with N, S, E, W on it. So I can accuratly say "Im running east just past the alleyway north and the flag south." Something like that.

On the health indicator, Its fine right now. No need to make a Green, Yellow or Red. Most of the time you die within 1 or 2 shots anyways so taking the time to look at your health bar is irrelavent. You should be hitting the deck rather then going "O no I am yellow" You know when your red because you start bleeding and you cant miss that.

Exactly.. I give compass or clock directions to my squad over TS or VOIP rather than actually "spot" the enemy.. simply because the time it takes to look at the enemy and say it usually leaves you.. well.. dead. If you see an enemy and hit the deck - only a fool sticks his head back up to tell his mates the exact location. Far better to verbally describe the position.

As for the mini-map generally.. I mainly use it when I shout "I need a medic here!" - as it shows the location of the nearest medic. That shouldn't be lost imo.

For ammo etc. messages, it should be removed as text.

But, if possible keep it as text for the appropriate classes. IE, if you call for ammo, everyone hears it, but only Support see the text, so they can better identify you. Same applies for calling for medical attnetion.

Sounds like a good idea, but the ammo thing sounds a little pointless, the number thing is fine.

Personally, I think the mini-map should be removed and only key units should appear on the map (squad leaders and vehicles)

Magazine and grenade count is fine for the HUD

Less text messages would be nice. I hate seeing "GET AMMO HERE LOLOLOL"
