Falling in love with sniper role.

Post by scm_ming »

Just now I played a game and work as a sniper. And it is the only game that portraits snipers relatively realistically. One teammate joined me and be my spotter. In the Insurgency game.
Our main job is work as a recon. Spotting enemies and eliminating threats.
We sneaked into a 2 story house about 300 yards from the village where the insurgent storing weapon cache. After waiting for a while. Enemy starts rushing out from the village. A RPG soldier rushing toward our Vehicle Checkpoint so we contacted the team for RPG threat. It's too far away and he's running I couldn't take confident shot.
And then I spotted a sniper in a building. And I aimmed carefully and took him out. Perhabs now they awared of our existence. Some of the insurgent guy moving toward our building. I tell my spotter to take out his CQB weapon. They are getting closer and I said "Wait, hold your fire if they didn't see us.". But they trying to get in the building. My spotter tried to kill them. Then we got owned by RPG. Sigh...

Then again. I work as a sniper. And sneaked into a ruined building somewhere near the village. And contact my team for enemy threats. Our APC and tanks moving toward the village. Then I spotted 2 guys with AK47 and RPG appeared on the rooftop trying to set up ambush I think.
Then I notify my team for their positions. Obviously they are a threat to our APC and Tanks that are moving toward the village. So I decided to take the shot. I fired at the guy with RPG first.
When the RPG guy moving toward and prepared to take the shot. I shot him right in the head. Then the guy with AK notice his partner's death after maybe 2 second later. Obviously he don't know where the shot from. And I see him hesitating to retreat. Then I fired another shot and finished him off. And then I see a insurgent sniper appeared on the same rooftop. Obviously I took him out too. Ahhh...it supposed to be the time to reposition. Then again. I see someone moving toward my building. Damn maybe he heard my shot? I'm not sure if he spotted me. I tried to hide to see if he just trying to check out the building. Then a bunch of grenades spammed my building. And I'm dead lol.

By the way. It would be much much better if snipers are dressed in guillie suit in Reality mod. Snipers supposed to be stealthy. And it is best to provide different kind of guillie suit to suit different environment like forest, woodland, desert etc. We supposed to be difficult to spot. If we got spotted, our games are over.

I think this belongs more in the "Tales from the Frontlines" section, but it's good to hear you enjoy playing PR.

Welcome to the forums, glad you had a good round and used the sniper kit effectively and with tactics and forethought; you can do the same supporting my squad any day mate.

But in BF2 kits do not render at range, i.e. they will see you without ghille suites after a couple of hundred of meters even if you have one.

Use building cover creatively like you did with the two story in its place.

Yes. I love the fact that only 1 sniper is allowed in a team too. I really hate to see 17 snipers camping on the same spot the Counter-Strike way like in the original BF2 game. The big failure of BF2 sniper is that snipers is fragile yet lacks the one shot kill(Except a direct headshot) firepower to threaten the enemy.

The guillie suit doesn't work in BF2 engine. That's too bad. IMO that's the most interesting thing of a true sniper. Blending into the environment sneaking around etc...
Anyway, I think another improvement is a more effective communication system. Snipers supposed to have better ability to do the scouting/recon job. e.g. I spot an enemy and I want all my teammates to know it. Now I can only type or use the mic. Check out the map grid and tell the rough position. By the time I reported it. The enemy has already gone. Especially those civilian who drive a car that look like a 1985 old Toyota, but faster than a F1 car.

Well atm, you can press Q, right click, and afaik if you select a vehicle spotted (not sure about infantry spotted) you will mark a vehicle on the map for all to see, and it even uses vBF2 tracking so it will move with the targeted vehicle for a time

there is an improved targeting communication system, its called teamspeak (or if you wanna be wierd; ventrillo) but its hard to get the necessary people on the teamspeak server to do it properly.

But TBH, talking via the commander when acting as a recon sniper team works quite well

"commander, this is sniper team"
wait 15 seconds, repeat if necessary
"sniper team go ahead"

"enemy blah blah on my attack marker/at grid ref yackedy yack yack roger that"
then your job is done, its in the commander's hands now

edit- *disclaimer* the above is probably wrong in terms of how the military use coms in real life, but as far as I can see it is the most descriptive and efficient way of talking ingame to your commander.

The number of snipers depend on the number of people on that side, maximum is 2.

the guillue actualy does help sometimes,

When I was a sniper at qwai my spotter killed, so i coutinued my mission and went to temple. US forces atacked in large numbers so I near a a bunch of tree and went prone, knowing i couldn't take all them out myself. then they built a bunker 10m infront of me on the outside of temple. the intire time, they walked all around me and one almost steped on me. Out of my stupidity I use the commo rose to spot the bunker. the squad leader standing next to me heard me and knifed me.
So all in all the guillie suits do help u\you

Either that or they're like the guys in "All ghillied up" on CoD4 that have poor peripheral vision...

LOL. So Guillie suit does help at close distance. That is irony. You need to walk far away to get ride of the grass draw distance to spot a sniper.

Might have changed after .75, although I'm pretty sure I've seen 2 snipers on my team plenty of times, and more then enough for it to have been a stolen kit. Either way I hope it gets taken down to 1 if it hasn't already.

Nice to see someone doin their job properly, snipers either seem to be helpful, take time with their shots, and won't shoot at all for long periods of time when they know they won't get away with it; OR they're that pain in the arse I kick out my squad, but won't stay out cos I can't lock my $£^&ing squad.

Er..I thought PR was all about team work! Snipers is'nt team work, it's loners that want to rack up kill's.

Clearly you've never played a game where the sniper (team) spotted hostile troop movements, large targets such as tanks/APCs and helicopter drop offs or informed the team of capture point status. They are rare sights, but I hope you see one in "action". :)

M.Warren is one realistic sniper I've seen. The battlefield information he relays allows the team to get a good feel for the situation without traveling halfway across the map.

It's a great asset if used properly, like any tool on the field.

i love the sniper too...

And a 2 man sniper sq can help the team so much if used right...

But there are to often guys that use it like a "normal" gun...

It´s not the shooting that helps the team. But the reporting is great to win the round. Dont get me wrong, i shoot :-) but only @ targets i know i can take out with one shot, and only @ targets like medics, commanders, or the HAT Guys...

And if the spotter gets the SF Kit, its great to give the air sq laser marks... Its nice to see the big boom and dont even hear the bomber that drops it...

BTw. give the sniper a SOFLAM in 0.8 :-)
