I'm pretty sure the game engine used for BF2 is quite capable BUT using/modding the engine would require buying a license.

What we're stuck with is a packaged implementation called BF2 with it's cons/pros when it comes to modability.

There are alternatives:
The engines from IDSoftware (Q3 and onwards) have so far spawned of a vaste range of games like RtCW, W:ET, COD series, ET:QW and so on.

The two latest engines Tech4 (ET:QW and upcoming Wolfenstein) and Tech5 (upcoming title RAGE ) can handle both large environments and vehicles.

All IDS engines have so far proved to be highly modabale.

Two of the things I've always seen as a downer in BF2 engine are:

- The "stuttering" feeling when moving around. It's simply not fluid and this is where IDS engines excel.

- Indoor scenarios seems to be rare in BF2. I don't know if this is due to restrictions in engine or just not popular by devs. They always been a strong card in IDS engines.

I'm also looking forward to see what OFP2 engine will deliver as well as the Frostbite engine.

I think bad companys engine is the next best hope. I was playing on it again yesterday and its pretty good. I just wish it was on pc allready so it was possible to see how flexible it is.
Its only 12 vs 12 on console I think? not sure it would fit anything like pr or not

Anyone heard what happened to bfh

BF2 engine has 9 years old. The Refractor engine was first used in a game called codename eagle in 1999. Then it was overhauled and used in battlefield 1942 (Refractor engine 2). Battlefield 2 uses the same engine "Refractor 2". The engine is old, and games like PR must migrate to other engines. The engine is OK for now but the Devs are alreay making miracles!

Wrong, but your mistake is understandable. BF2 is based on the Refractor 2 engine, which was designed specifically for Battlefield 1942 and modified/improved heavily for Battlefield 2 and its spin-offs. Therefore, the Refractor 2 engine is six years old, not nine. The connection between the Refractor 1 and Refractor 2 engine is quite unclear, but it seems that Refractor 2 was designed for the standards of 2002, not 1999.

For such an old engine, it does have a lot of potential...
