Intense online lag.

Post by hypnotoad »

Let me start out by saying I love this mod. Unfortunately, it is very difficult to enjoy on account of the massive online lag I get when playing it.

For a start, BF2 lags pretty hard by itself, but PR does it even more so. It feels to me that everything is server side. Whenever I move, my character twitches and skips all over the place, and I get giant lag spikes. All other games I play perform fine online. I assume this is a BF2 side issue, it only seemed to have come up after DICE released those death "patches" that incidentally made more holes in the game, but once again, it is magnified in PR, despite the fact that I have a ping of 50-100.

I am not sure if you guys could fix this, but maybe give it a shot? I can barely play the game.

This is highly unlikely to be a bug. Sounds like you need a new computer though.
Try turning your settings down (as you are probably getting FPS drops).

I would look around for guides to BF2 optimizing. I get these a few times, but it only really happens when I'm moving into a new area. You might have some little problem that you never thought of. :-P

New as in AMD 5400+ Dual core proccesor, 4 GB of RAM, and an nividia 8800GT?

Because that is what I am already using.

I might just drop the GFX to the lowest, I am sure some of thyese spikes have something to do with the rendering of the ginourmous/detailed maps. But most of it appears to be internet issues.

Well, try turning lighting to medium (keep everything else). I know a couple people that lag (that have better systems than you) with lighting on high. Just to tell you there is no graphical difference between medium and high, just better FPS. Lighting on high will kill you if you look at glass too. The buildings by the British main on Al Basrah are a perfect example of it.

When in-game, open up your console and type: renderer.drawFps 1
What does it say?

Edit: lol, I hope you mean 4GB of RAM though. Although Bill once said 128k is enough for everyone............

LOL, yes. I meant 4GB. Edited.

I am fairly sure this is an internet issue, I have changed all settings to low, and my framerate only improves by about 20.

Though BF2 and by further extension, PR lag like hell. Though PR is considerably worse. I don't know a huge ammount of technicals, but this is the way it feels:

In most games, my client sends info to the server, and then the server shows other players me, as it sees me. So I might be in a slightly different position than others see me.

IN BF2/PR, it seems like my client sends info, the server sends back the way it sees me, and my first person view moves as such. Which is insedentally very skippy.

What I mean is that in most games, the way you see your movement will eb different and smoother than others see it. In BF2, you move exactly as others see it. So you may mvoe slighty, but you will move about a meter, or not move at all instead.

Yeah, I've been to multiple servers, all lag insanely hard. I use SHAW for my ISP, they are sucky, but not in this sort of way.

Twitches, skips and lagspikes are only server side if all clients get them.
I get them whenever i forget to turn off my downloads before gaming.
Sure there's no other computers on your network downloading or something?
Are you on wireless connection? That may cause heavy packet loss.
If it's not, it sounds like your ISP is the problem.

Your hardware should not be a problem at all, unless you have a bottleneck somewhere you left out. You might want to try rinsing your system of infections, defragmenting, clean the registry etc if your installation is old.

Sometimes azureus is running, but even when it is off, there is almost no difference. Its not so much the fact that it lags, the problem I have is how it lags. BF2 has got the most intrusive, agressive lag of all games. I have moments where I will do a 180 when I move my view a few degrees.

Well bro, i run the game smoothly on a Athlon 4000+, 2 GB Ram and GeForce 8400 GS, and my ping is about 200~250.

Try, check for virus, Defrag, Scandisk... Check your cables too, maybe humidity (Is this the right word?) on the cables or such.

Lower your AA if you are doing the quick 180's with the mouse, or turn it off.
