I think most if not all of us have at one stage or another, gone off on our own and did our own thing...wether it be because the squad leader was not communicating, or if you were having one of those days where you just couldnt be bothered.

As a wise gamer once said... "Players are hardcoded."

So i'm trying to figure out what puts people off being squad leader, and what makes gamers go off on their own and break formation. If we had a really good idea of what peoples feelings are in general, just before they break formation then we would be able to locate possible solutions more accuratly.

Personally, like i said above, one of the things that pisses me off is where the squad leader doesnt speak. Its usually where i have joined a server half way through the round and most of the squads are full, except for one squad which has 5 guys with special kits that are just arsing around and not following any instruction of any discription. the funny thing is, it only takes one guy to say, "come on lads, lets do this properly", and they will start playing together. but because of the lack of communication and coordination the individual gamer in a **** squad feels the nessesity to resort to soloing.

There ARE other things that make guys go off on their own, but it would be cool if other people could spot them and put them in this thread

Alot of SLs are idiots. Plain and simple.

I have never been to the military, but i have played almost every single mass multiplayer warfare game out there and u tend to learn ppl's tactics.

The problem is to try and get people to listen to you. Im not Sl and i tend to give order that the SL agrees to all the time. But i dont want to be SL because i like to do my own thing as long as its the same goal of my squad. I work much better alone due to my sneaky sneaky.

If a SL tells u to do something that you know is a suicide mission, i mean... if it doesnt serve a purpose its utterly useless.

Do you have any idea how many times i just went into a squad took over control when i was not a SL just to use the ppl on the squad for my purposes and taken care of a whole enemy squad or two (or chache bunkers, just assets in general) by myself? Its mind boggling.

There is no way to fix lack of experience. Some people will have to just play long enough to build up common sense about things.


THat and 6 year old SLs and Commanders.... why?? Who listens to them??

Oh and additionally, if im SL im limited to my officer kit, when i know i can use another kit ALOT more effectivaly than some of the people on my squad or team. That is a biggy i think.

Thats a good one. I have mentioned this lately in other sections of the forum, but the officer kit gets on my nerves.

A bit of selection would be nice in terms of officer kits, maybe more than 1 to choose from would be nice.

I concur, although I find that everything the officer kit has is pretty useful.

A lot of the time the only reason I squad lead is because nobody else would start a squad before the setup timer hits 0:00. I'm really not that great of a squad leader. I assume that you understand the basic mission such as "attack that north flag" and I'm not going to continuously repeat our mission in different words. I will give basic orders such as "we flank to the north then charge the flag as soon as we are together" and I assume squad members understand what targets they should engage with the weapon they have and how they should go about engaging it.

I think the part right at the beginning where I start assuming things about the player is where I go wrong. Players who don't understand the basic tactics that I'm trying to employ are the ones who I typically see respawn at main and solo an APC or grab a sniper kit and hoof it into the mountains.

Basically, I think the squad leaders that micro-manage are the ones who keep people in their squads doing what they want. I don't like to issue unnecessary orders and hope that you have the common sense to do what helps your team.

There arn't that many good SL's but every so often when I stumble across a good on I will stick with them. I do go SL some times but as anyone who has been in a squad that I'm leading will tell you..Im not the best SL to ever walk the Battle Field.

Generally people will do there own thing if the SL doesnt know anything and just uses the tatic 'run at that APC till there are so many dead it can't move' or something like it. I will listen to a SL only up to a certain amount of stupid. And this is the same as most people, if your SL's tatic is run, gun then die then most people will swap squads.

I used to love squad leading but eventually it just began to feel like a chore trying to organize 6 random guys and use them well. I like to know exactly what everyone's doing and when you don't get that "perfect squad" which is a fair bit of the time, it can be pretty tedious to say the least.

0.6 and before were my favourite versions to SL. Trying to stay alive for that extra 10 seconds so your squad can spawn while you have 10 enemies charging into you. Those were the most stressful and also the most fun times for me.

Now it seems like unless you have 5 competent players you are screwed against any decent squad no matter how much you micro-manage or tell people how to do things. I don't kick people because they "aren't very good" either which usually doesn't help.

I get tired of people asking me why I'm doing certain things all the time, I get tired of trying to explain my logic for every decision or continually telling me what they think is a better idea. Being SM you have to be intelligent about giving your opinions to the SL, everyone forgets stuff now and again and it's nice to remind them, but not all the time, that just get's on peoples nerves.

One thing I do miss is some patience and basic discipline, if I say 'don't fire' you don't fire and thats it, I don't want to repeat it 10 times, type it twice in Caps over squad chat and repeat this situation at least five times so the the gold fish memory kid finally takes note.

I actually like consulting with the squad or ask them for any ideas, since I am not almighty, wise and 1337 like some regular SLs think they are

Totally agree...its taken me many months to sort out my preferances as squad leader...it really can be difficult at times. there are instances where the obvious manouver aint too obvious. Its time like those where i really appresiate a commander who has a good synergy with the squad leaders, which is rare. The times that im happiest is when the squad mimics my moves when we are moving on foot. Like if i hear an APC and i say "hit teh dek" and they all go prone, it puts a sparkle in my eye

I have been in situations where i made a bad judgement call and ended up getting flanked really badly, causing people to leave the squad, but i think sometimes people get frustrated because they truly thought that they couldnt die. maybe im wrong...I think it would be cool that when you load up a round and jump in a squad the basic kit selection would shade in kits that the squad allready has and highlight the ones that are needed.

Well what puts me off is too many people going off on their own. I dont like snipers in my squad, because it is not what snipers do. If you join my squad because you want the sniper kit its fine its part of the game so why shouldnt you get to be one, but leave after you got the kit to make room for a teamplayer. Snipers do scouting and engage in combat wherever is a stalemate where plenty of targets are lying prone and your own team distracts from the presence of a sniper. Therefore a sniper has to seek out situations of that kind rather than to stick with a squad.
People going lonewolfing in general or not following orders so you cant even set up a rally, makes me question their mental integrity. Why play a game UNREaL style with battlefield grafics ? Its like driving a VW GOLF that eats fuel like a LAMBO, because that is what you get if you drepive yourself of aspects like teamplay in this mod.

What puts me off a squadleader is a SL who does not want to be SL really. In 0.75 it was kind of rare I guess in 0.8 we will have to go through the new players who have yet to realize this mod isnt what they want.
