Tank main gun rounds
The main armament of russian MBTs, including the T-90's 125mm smoothbore gun, are capable of firing ATGMs such as the 9M119M 'Refleks' (known as AT-11 Sniper in the west). The T-90 should have this weapon in addition to APFSDS and HEAT rounds. I'm not sure about this weapon's guidance method, but I suppose it's laser beam riding, so the target would have to be illuminated during the missile's flight. I don't know if the chinese have similar missiles for their Type-98s, but I should think so.
Western MBTs in service currently lack similar weapons, although the israelis have developed the LAHAT missile that can be fired from all western 120mm smoothbore guns. The M1A2 could however get the STAFF top-attack rounds, if there is a way to implement this feature.

The T-90 and ZTZ-98 comes with 9M-119M Refleks gun launched atgm. The STAFF has been cancelled as of 2003/4 i think. Russia does not export gun launched ATGMs to other countries, but they are able to licence make them themselves. The XM1028 Canister rounds was tested in IRAQ and it was greatly welcomed in urban type environment, and highly effective against light vehicles and infantry.
Adding the ATGMS to tranks right now would make them fairly powerful against any flying/ground targets. Though i do welcome adding APers/Canister type munitions.
BTW, not all T-90s, and ZTZ-98 carry gun launched ATGMS.

Re: Tank main gun rounds
Correct, not all T-90s equiped with 9M119M guided missiles because their launch reduces main gun firing resource. Missile guidance method is laser beam riding. Firing accuracy is close to 1,0 on static targets or moving ones with 70 km/h speed on 100-5000 meters distance. 9M119M missiles can be fired from static positions or in movement on 30 km/h speed.
Currently used markings for shots with 9M119M missiles are ZUBK14 or ZUBK20 equal in size to regular 125mm ammunition.
I'd like to see tanks firing guided missiles too, but I'm not sure they can be used against choppers.

If violence isn't the answer, then you obviously need more violence.

Re: Tank main gun rounds
It would work similar to the LGB on the jets, right? Requiring another person to lase the target? If so, there shouldn't be any problem adding this would there? Reducing the ordinance load of tanks using this sort of ammo would be the balance people might have problems with.
Failing that, we could "invent" a new vehicle the MEC designed themselves -- knowing they would have to sacrifice ordinance in their tanks, they instead opted to retrofit an M113 or something similar to carry a few in a launch platform of their own design. Powerful, but not heavily armored.

You may very well be right.

its act more like a tow , you would need any spotter or anything , you your mouse and keep the target in sight .Expendable Grunt wrote:It would work similar to the LGB on the jets, right? Requiring another person to lase the target? If so, there shouldn't be any problem adding this would there?

Re: Tank main gun rounds
Is this really necessary?!
All tanks have APFSDS rounds for anti-vehicular work and all tanks have HEAT for anti-infantry along with the Coaxial Machine Gun. Would adding another munition that does the same thing as the AP round except it flies slower really worth it?

Everyone wants to easily kill their opponent but nobody wants to be the one easily killed. That line of thinking escalates weaponry to the point where practically every soldier has a shoulder-mounted nuke launcher that when fired, automatically displays the text "pwnt".- [R-CON]Wolfe

Actually you wouldn't have to invent anything. As DeltaFart pointed out in my Tank Destroyer thread, to my mild dismay, most Tank Destroyers have either been designed or refitted as Missile Tank Destroyers, exchanging the gun for missiles.Ghost1800 wrote:Inventing vehicles seems like a slippery slope for a mod like this.

Indeed, as they're actually laser beam riding rather than homing onto a laser spot it would not, as I understand it, actually work with a seperate spotter.[R-CON]77SiCaRiO77 wrote:its act more like a tow , you would need any spotter or anything , you your mouse and keep the target in sight .
Anyway, ATGMs, buckshot rounds, HESH rounds and more have been suggested before. By me. Locked.
The key to modernising any weapon is covering them in glue and tossing them in a barrel of M1913 rails until they look "Modern" enough.
