Land Rover Replacement?
I was playing Al Basra tonight(this morning) and i realized for the first time just how little protection the GB Land Rovers offer their occupients compaired to a Humvee. Unless your hideing behind the the front quarter pannels of a stopped LR, your very likely to get shot. If somebody told me to drive one of those into a hot zone, i would tell them to have there head examined. Now don't get me wrong, i understand that Project Reality is about realism and the PR Land Rover is as about real as it gets. Now i am a civi, and an American one at that, so as i was researching for this post i found at article stateing that the Land Rover Defender is eventually going to be replaced by a US made "Ridgback", which is a variant of the Cougar MRAP. for the sake of the squad that i lost in Al Basra, PLEASE GIVE THE BRITISH SOME LIGHT ARMOR!

Re: Land Rover Replacement?
In PR I personally prefer the Landrover, more firepower, smaller target, and now that I think about it after watching the vid, the Landie does give much better visibility. Too bad we can't also incorporate some kind of getting out time but whatever. Landrover should stay.

Re: Land Rover Replacement?
We could do with a vehicle that can take a few more troops, but it is nice having a full squad in 2 of them, much more manoeuvrable then the Hummers if you ask me, seem to get up to speed alot quicker too, which I imagine is the case in real life too.

Re: Land Rover Replacement?
A heavier vehicle is definantly needed for insurgency warfare, but im guessing those mraps might be a bit to large? lol

i PMed the guy in the videos asking about what he thought about the protection of the WIMKS a while ago and he said:Swe_Olsson wrote:How about no? brits choose firepower over protection..
Yes we are exposed, But the Wmik can reach more hard to get to places. It can cover more boggy ground, than the hummer. So therefore you have to take the rough with the smooth!
Goody!

Re: Land Rover Replacement?
Would much rather have the landy
Notice how the brits take to doors off theirs so they can get out and attack quicker whereas the americans rather plate more armour on the doors to hide behind

I prefer the Landrover too. It's somewhat of an original to me playing PR. It's not PR without the landrover!

Re: Land Rover Replacement?
but whats the possibility of finding a land rover rolling down the streets of baghdad ? just as an example.. I'm sure the Land rover is better suited in the rocky afghanistan tho

Re: Land Rover Replacement?
Landy's IIRC are used in FSGs etc, not as troop transport, as gazz mentioned, APCs are primary troop transport. And also bad reference I know, but in Generation Kill, the guys have a completely open top humvee. IIRC it's only recently due to insurgency warfare that the Humvee's are being up armoured.

Re: Land Rover Replacement?
As the guys have said the landy you see in pr is fire support not a transport. The Jackal is the replacement for the wmik and will allow for better protection while still keeping the fast fire support abilitys that are required.
(Jackel photo just because its sexy)

The snatch was the version of landy that was a troop transport but that’s being dumped. For the reason of that while it may do ok in northern Ireland against stones and small arms the rpgs and IEDs of our conflicts today make it look like shredded tissue paper.

Re: Land Rover Replacement?
Guys like to point out. unlike the US HMMWV (not hummer..that'l be the civi one) the Brtish WMIK LAND ROVER IS NOT A TRANSPORT VEHICLE, IT IS A FIRE SUPPORT Vehicle, meant to be light, agile and manovarable, hecnce no armour.. not like us HMMWV tht are so bogged down with armour, im supprised it can move and probly does Gallons to the meter!!
WIMK (weapon mount installation kit) is... well that is wot it is. not transport. And IRL the amount of kit that it carrys.. well it attached to the jeep everywhere, so provides them cover. But the idea of it is that it monovers into postion where most vehicles cnt get to, poor it's rain of fire down on the enemy and is gone again before it takes fire. So no dnt replace it. It is wot it is. Tho the brits are buying new Mastiffs and heavily-armed 4x4 Jackal patrol vehicles, and a number of lighter vehicles to replace the existing fleet of Viking personnel carriers. Have a look at those. But the Brit WMIK is not a transport, its a FIRE-SUPPORT vehicle.
Think tht is my victory there!!.
I MEAN LOOK ... http://www.defense-update.com/images_ne ... v_frag.jpg ITS LIKE A FRICKIN TANK.. now that sud be in PR tho .. right?? 0 and put all the kit on the WMIK'S and detail up more plz =)

Make the cooldown time on the land rovers .50cal 15 seconds instead of 30 seconds ?

Actually, I think that's a good idea. This would make up for the fact you can't accurately represent the get in and out timeRaniak wrote:Make the cooldown time on the land rovers .50cal 15 seconds instead of 30 seconds ?

Re: Land Rover Replacement?
Considering that the only British units deployed in Baghdad are UKSF and thier support units (mainly troops from 1 PARA) and said units spend much of thier time impersonating Americans so as not to draw unwanted attention, not very high.Swe_Olsson wrote:but whats the possibility of finding a land rover rolling down the streets of baghdad ? just as an example.. That said the main landrovers deployed in Iraq are the SNATCH rather than the Wolf WIMK, and as such are armoured rather more substantially but dont have the same fire capabilities.
The replacement for the WIMK is the Supacat, where as the SNATCH is the Mastiff, Ridgeback and the Armoured Pinzgauer.
The key to modernising any weapon is covering them in glue and tossing them in a barrel of M1913 rails until they look "Modern" enough.
