Should PR be a game in its own right - discuss

Post by Jigsaw »

As the PR community continues to grow significantly between each update, and this shows no signs of stopping, the question today is:

Should PR become a game in its own right, separate to vBF2, probably available as a d/l to members of this forum and for a small fee so as to prevent the mod being opened up to the masses.

This would allow the devs more freedom with what they want to achieve within the game.

Im sure a lot of you agree that this mod is better than vBF2 and share my belief in the devs ability to come up with a quality game, given the excellence of this mod.

Btw I am sitting on the fence for this I just thought it would be an interesting topic for debate.

Opinions, banter, random insults and hopefully some informed discussion below please :-D

While I do think it should be labeled as its own game since there is so much content different from vBF2. have a feeling that it will either never become its 'own' game or it will take a freakin long time to get to that point.

As for having a fee for downloading I disagree, this will stop the idiots for sure...but if you had to pay for a mod you have never played would you do it?

I think the better idea is pushing for donations a little more...so one day the Dev's could possibly buy the open source for the BF2 engine, giving them 100% rights to change everything. This would help it become its own game a lot faster IMO.

So I will direct EVERYONE to the link... go there, lol at it and then donate...don't be cheap

Nice tanking earlier Davet.

This man knows things. Listen to him. Everything in that post is true (but shouldn't be, we should all already own the right to do a lot more with the source than we can at the moment)

Well, I hope for Project Reality that someday it can come up with its own engine.
But I don't think 200$ a month can cover that, so yeah, i agree to some extent, I'd definatly pay for it, gonna donate some very soon as well, but about wether or not it'll scare players away... Maybe the devs should wait for a few more versions before setting up a fee for PR.

Opening the game for the masses isn't a bad thing at all, since most of the people learns to be better gamers in PR. And it can't be stopped now anyway.

In my opinion it's a good idea, and I would fully support it, but I think we should wait a little longer.

Who knows, someday Project Reality could be competeing with the biggest software companies, and it wouldn't be named PR anymore...

So a bigger player base is needed. Make videos and write about PR on other sites.
I've written about it on Operation Flashpoint forums and made a video or two.

I hope its just more than us two getting the word out about PR :-P

I would love too see PR at my local game shop in its own box with a set of PR dog tags included to make some nice little colectors items ;-) .

But I also agree with Canadian4206 somewhat too. While we cant really change from the BF2 engine since there is pretty much no other engine to support the game in the same ways (big maps, squads, both soldiers and vehicles, decent graphics and low system usage). Because we can't change this will slow down having PR become 100% stand alone.

But if it stays web based and somehow the PR team can buy the rights to the engine I think it would take off like a flash.

If I win a cool million I will buy the FULL engine for you DEV's :D

Well ideally we would want each and every mod to have an engine of its own specifically tailored torwards the mod we love so much, but it aint realistic. Hopefully better than the BF2 engine will come along. I have high hopes on operation flashpoint 2. Who knows, maybe it will be super PR right out of the box.

Personally I'm hoping every day that by the time I graduate I'll be hired to work at Project Reality Studios... although I doubt that'll happen... and if it does it won't happen that fast ;)

But still, I'd give up everything but two things if it meant I could work for PR for a living.
