hotwiring and then taking control of the tank is extremely unlikely in my oppinion, because that means the engineer:
a. understands the language of whatever nation is the owner of the tank he is stealing.
b. has experience in the control layout of the said tank, and this is assuming the layout is unchanged from the base model.
and as far as i know, engineers aint taught any of thoose although they perhaps have some technical information on the tank, unlikely to be enough to gain control of it however.
What they could do however might be in sabotaging the tank's part, an engineer i reckon can improvise and do quite a bit in screwing up the tank's exposed parts given enough time. How exactly do they keep the tank still and have enough time to do that while making sure no one sees him and shoot him dead though is something they have to figure out themself.

Truth be told, the only class that would even come close to being able to utilize enemy ordinance and vehicles would be the Spec Ops. Those elite units are trained and then mission trained. How many regular army grunts could pick up an AK-47 and be able to do anything to it other than pull the trigger? What about the AT kits? Medic even. Engys could certainly disable vehicles in ways that would require significant amounts of time to repair, remove links out of tank tracks and then ruin spares, remove distributor or ignition chip from jeeps. All of this falls "realistically" into small unit special weapons and tactics training. The general regular army grunts might be able to pull off some very basic swap over moves, but usually nothing that could upset the course of the battle. I would say that jeeps, apcs and other wheeled vehicles would be fairly easy to commandeer. Tanks, maybe IF you had a tanker class. Language barriers are annoying, BUT weapon systems and controls could and would be figured out in short order. Tank crews are pretty darn sharp and are cross trained for effect. Air vehicles are just a no go. If you do not have time in that type, you just can't pull it off. You might get off of the ground, you might get out of the base, but you will not be able to pilot that vehicle in a combat fashion or even be able to utilize it in any evasive type manuver. Flight systems just don't work that way.
So, to make a long post longer, Spec Ops should be able to truly use anything short of aircraft. Engys should be able to disable vehicles in ways that would require another engy time to repair. As far as push pull objects go, I can see the advantage of that for a defending force. Removal of those objects would require time and kit sensitive issues while exposing those soldiers to fire while trying to remove the obstacles. It all boils down to what the devs are capable of doing within the framework of the BF2 engine. And that is where the road for me turns from smooth and wide to simply impassible.

the smoker you drink, the player you get. Cheap, but effective.

sabatoge sounds fun - use the wrench on enemy vehicles and they cant move - you can still use the turret (mg/+cannon) but it just cant drive anywhere until the team whose vehicle got their hoses cut comes with an eng/wrench to fix it back to full health - probly, or maybe more likely definately the BF2 engine cant do that though... but a guy can dream, cant he?
