I feel the need to point out that both Rudd and scot have the same post count
Doesn't this sort of thing normally start black holes?

Re: Things you can do while commanding in 0.8 :D
On TG, I get relatively good contact reports, and sitreps. The problem is that all I am there to do is make sure that everyone knows what's going on. As a commander, the only thing I bring to the battle that can't be emulated without a commander is Fire Support, which is horribly limited anyway.[R-CON]Deer wrote:Commander's satellite map was there to make it so that he can give orders without receiving information from other players, instead the information was given by the map.
And everyone knows how good players are at giving information to commander so that he could actually command...
I'd never use a satscan to get information a squad could give me anyway. I'd be using it to get intel that my squads couldn't get so they could do their job better. It would mean the commander would have a capability that couldn't be emulated without him.
I know PR wants to distance itself from Vanilla, but access to military satellites is pretty common in the US military. The US has a real reputation for its high tech orientation and use of technology to augment combined arms operations. The US is miles ahead of anyone else in sigint and air power, and we don't model that in game. Maybe if we give the commanders of each factions some unique abilities it will help make the maps play out very differently.
For example, reduce the timer on US JDams, make them smaller, and give him limited use SatScans - US never has access to mortars or arty. Give China more artillery options like WP, Smoke and HE or Frag. Give MEC access to some extra logistics options (they're always fighting on home territory), or a straight out advantage in equipment on the ground. Make the British more balanced, with access to some Arty/Mortars and some JDAMs...
These are just ideas, which are probably hard coded anyway, but you can see what I'm getting at. Some changes to the symmetry of balance at the command level would be much appreciated. There's another thread of mine that goes into great detail about changing MEC-US balance. It had some pretty cool ideas imo.
Also, someone mentioned not being able to mod the player base. This is completely untrue. I'm on the beta team for DotA, and about 9/10th of what we do is directly aimed at changing how people play. There are whole levels of terminology devoted to describing elements of the player base. DotA has had a lot longer for us to evolve a sophisticated understanding of how the game works, but the principles are the same. The Devs have shown with past releases that they know how to use tweaks in game dynamics to change how people play the game (like the sprint change, and deviation changes). I may not agree with the directions they have taken in some cases, but they have shown themselves very much capable of changing the metagame using elements in the game.
tl;dr the player base is moddable, the devs know how to do it.
Edit: someone made the player base comment in another thread :\ still worth mentioning.

It is very much possible to make ppls play like you want them to play, thing is that more different kind of ppls you try to manipulate, more skill you need to make it to work for all those different kind of ppl. If you concentrate on one type of ppls such as hardcore players, its very easy to make a game for them. But if you want to make game that works for hardcores + casuals it needs some more skill.
Now if you try to make a game that works for harcores + casuals + grandmothers it will be even harder..
Currently PR has loads of casuals and current build doesnt support them, unlike builds like 0.5 which did work for casuals as well as hardcores.
This aint so offtopic afterall, because commander works for hardcores but not for casuals.

I wouldn't mind if each faction got a slightly different commander abilities if it was done right.Truism wrote:

I would like to see the total zoom down in the commander screen brought back, but have it be like a snapshot that you can get only ever 1/2 hour or so and that you would have to pour over to see anything.
Probably not possible though.
Everyone wants to easily kill their opponent but nobody wants to be the one easily killed. That line of thinking escalates weaponry to the point where practically every soldier has a shoulder-mounted nuke launcher that when fired, automatically displays the text "pwnt".- [R-CON]Wolfe

Yeah it might be an idea to bring back the first zoom, but it has to be done right.

If you feel bored then you are obviously at the wrong place. If ppl dont listen to you then there are 2 options: 1. you are incompetent or you are not able to impose yourself as commander 2. Sl-s are incompetent or not taking game seriously
It works in RL the same way if you are at leaders position. Not anybody can be a good leader.
For example if Im Sl and commander puts the marker on the other side of the map and tells me go there I dont listen him if he dont comment decisions like that. I think in PR commander must have mic to be taken seriously.
What I do as commander is planning things 2 steps ahead- thing where SL-s fail. I have many satisfying rounds as commander but I must admit I miss the earlier version of commanding.

I already suggest somehing like that. Maybe bringing the UAV back, 5 or 10min timer. and you drop it on the map, --> you can see the Area around 100m away from the UAV in Realtime (with delay if possible)[R-COM]TheScot666 wrote:Yeah it might be an idea to bring back the first zoom, but it has to be done right.
Maybe you find ways to code it!
and i also think that the fractions should have diffrence (i mean USA/USMC/PLA/BRITS/MEC) they just have some diffrent weapons, but same strategy! maybe giving them so "special" things like insurgents have.

That snapshot idea is absolutely awesome. Half hour timer might be a bit much though, 10 minutes would be easily enough.
I wouldn't want to see UAVs much though, unless of course they were manned and piloted from somewhere else, perhaps even by the commander (who then has a look down view)....
I think I'm getting ahead of myself here.

No, BF2 Team Size 100-300 Troops. While only 32 may be active at a time, there's a heck of a lot more, just not "there".[R-DEV]CAS_117 wrote:BF2 team size = 32 troops.

Infantry, APCS, Tanks, Light Vehicles, Boats (?????) = Pretty much all of them.
The rest are support elements which he has access to.
Edit: This is getting off topic. (OP) I usually see how fast I can cycle through the squads without pressing the wrong button.
