Sat Recon

Post by Cobhris »

I know the BF2 sat scan that instantly revealed everyone is extremely unrealistic and should never return, but why shouldn't the commanders have access to a top down view of the battlefield (the closest zoom level from bf2)? In real life, the U.S uses military satellites very frequently to track enemy movements and I'm pretty sure that MEC and China could share Chinese spy satellites to get this sort of intel. What I think is that the sat scan trailer should be brought back. It has to be built up (on commander orders), and enables the top-down real time view as long as it is standing. It also presents a key target for the enemy and might even give spec ops a job again in destroying enemy satellite relays. And if one is too OP, why not have it so you have to build several trailers a certain distance from one another to receive the sat signal and enable the real-time view for the commander?

And before you tell me "*** thread!": I already checked. NOTHING at all about this exists there.

However, one could assume that there is a recon aircraft like a P-3 Orion overhead providing camera feeds, so I say this suggestion makes sense. Plus it makes commander more useful, which is DESPERATELY needs.

I endorse this thread and/or sports arena.
I agree with you and support this idea. However this suggestion does seem familiar in some way, as if it HAS been suggested. But if he said it hasn't been suggested so then I'll give him the benefit of the doubt and let it go.

You can put a satellite into geosynchronous orbit which would allow the viewer to look at and monitor a specific area on the earth so long as that orbit is maintained.

Spy satellites operate at low orbits of a few hundred kilometers, and are thus indeed limited in the amount of time they can remain on any given area.

At around 35,000 kilometers, geosynchronous orbit is much higher and is inadequate for visual feedback with high resolution.

Nevertheless, I think this suggestion is very good, the commander desperately needs some ability to know more about the battlefield than vocal feedback and the poor tactical map. I personally think the best way to emulate it is via some controllable UAV.

Controllable in the sense that the commander can tell it where to go with the tactical map, it will take some time to get there, and once there the commander could survey the area visually like vBF2. This means the commander could not instantly check a different area of the map for enemies, so it would balance the power of the top-down view.

As long as the controllable UAV takes a few minutes to arrive at the marker, provides a less-than-perfect view, and can be shot down, I also support this idea and/or product.
