Can imagine it's not the most smooth working thing, the fact we even have it in PR is pretty unbelievable if you read what the DEVs said a year or so ago on the forums. They didn't have much faith in it ever working at all, nevermind completely solidly or adding any complexities to it.

I've been screwing around with the laser designator (launching a sticky projectile with a LaserTarget attribute applied) and have found that you can get it to be reliable at around a speed of 500 which is much faster than it currently is. However this is woefully inadequate for moving vehicles to use on other moving vehicles especially something as unstable as a helicopter. Wire guided seems the way to go. So yeah, now I know exactly why you have them they way they are right now. Pretty frustrating problem to deal with.
I've got several other ideas I'm working on (I've been modding helicopters and missiles for the past few days) and I'll let you guys know if I come up with something I think you'd be interested in.

Technically I think that the self-guided missiles is supposed to be kinda recreating the heli lasering them for itself. Didn't realise that helis could designate stuff themselves too till it was posted here, but at a guess I'd say that the laser targets the helis make are perhaps for stationary targets, because self-guiding missiles isn't that easy (from my experience at least).
Nice to hear you've had some progress though, keep it up.

Well the main problem is the lack of stabilization, not necessarily the designation. But the stabilization is not quite possible, so the designation is the only real way of getting the realistic balance.
Also the lack of tracking.

"oh, they're fire and forget all right...they're fired then they forget where the target is"

On a positive note the Ataka anti-tank missiles are radio guided and work in a similar fashion as wire guided munitions in BF2 do. I've read that the gunner has to keep the sight lined up on the target as the missile goes where-ever its pointed. The Mi-28 and the Hind use the Ataka missiles.
If you bump up the missile speed a bit and reduce the wire guidance's response to camera movement you can simulate firing at a painted target a bit. Where-ever you click is where the missile will guide itself to and since it goes so fast and doesn't respond well to camera movement it's kind of like having a laser guided missile traveling to some spot that's been lased (albeit you have to lead some moving vehicles when you fire).
