How big of a model woudl that be? I mean in DC it was gigantic to the point they never let you move it. I couldn't imagine what it would be on BF2!

I like, but not sure about the aresting cable tho...
I could see people using it to do a 'Maverick' in mid air, leaving enemy planes to rush past. Would be utterly ballzy, imo.

But I do like the idea tho :)

i dont mind the one you need for slowing down but the take off one may well be exploited for evasive maneuvers, while the one that slows you down can also be exploited in such a way it's not entirely unrealistic, it's like hitting the spoilers and opening up all your airbrakes.

Depends, if takeoff from a carrier is impossible without the boost then it won't be a problem.

YouTube - Project Reality Carrier Test 3/2

enjoy. 8)
seen them before, the EF2000 can fly at really low speeds (something that we need to fix) so it can easily land on a much shorter runway like that and the F-16, he just jumped out to stop it, as for take off, a r/l plane would need a much longer run up than that to get upto flight speeds in the conventional manner.

As an aside, part of my MOS in the Marines was the clearing of an area for an EAF (Expeditious Airfield) which is made out of a matting that locks together on the ground to make very good runways. We had land based arresting gear that was attached to our unit (my best friend worked on them) and would catch FA-18s all day long. The whole strip was just long enough for a FA-18 to take back off if they put the back landing gear at the edge of the runway and hit it hard. Interestingly enough the C-130 Hercules could also take off in this manner, though it landed conventionally and usually shifted the matting if weighed down.

We made similar smaller strips for helos and FARPs (fuel ammo and repair points) but they were of course much smaller.

The FA-18 has a very sturdy airframe. ;)

McLuv wrote:I like this Idea, though maybe the take off "cannon" can only be use when your speed is at 0 (to replicated the fact that planes don't start their take off then magically attach themselves to the cannon to gain speed).

Also, the landing gun be able to slow you down progressively to 0 speed if you land at 600-700 clicks.
It seems that everybody ignored this, although it is an excellent idea.

Set a control so that the takeoff "gun" could only be fired at 0 mph in a certain spot on the carrier (first 30 m of runway?) and only when the throttle is at 100%; however, the throttle has no effect on aircraft movement until the "cannon" is fired. Thus, taxying would still operate correctly and the cannon couldn't be accidentally fired.

The same concept could be use in the landing "gun." The cannon can only be fired when the throttle is in reverse thrusters mode or is within the 30 m zone on the runway, so as to stop spamming. This would slow the aircraft to speed 0, but only on the carrier.

To store the jets, a level inside the carter could be added with elevator systems to the deck, so as to allow taxying to the 30 m "takeoff/landing zone."

Wah-Pah!!! Late night surfing strikes again!!!

Maybe you can only use the slow down round with a low enough speed.
Would that fix it?

That's true, unfprtunately. Though if PR ever got a nimitz carrier or w/e, some of the ideas here could be used. But otherwise, true STOVL is what's needed, rather than anything else.

ye, if we ever had a Carrier designed for CATOBAR then these suggestions would be a good idea, such as the catapult done as a 1 shot weapon on the jet that could only be reloaded by landing back on the carrier.

Yea, and are you able to make different types of material more/less friction-y? As in they would slow you down faster? Anyways, even if the Chinese don't have a dedicated carrier yet, I'd love to see a rendition of that, rather than having to use placeholder extended USS Essexes for the wrong factions :P

Soviet aircraft carrier Varyag - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

that is the closest thing to a Chinese Carrier, but its future is unclear.

Cool, Who'd you steal it from?

Anyway it looks like it needs to be UVed anyway.

lol, I'm sorry but its not made correctly for BF2, its far too low poly and it would need UVmapping / skinning...

It would be better to make one from scratch :p
