Improved Alternate use of Weapons and Tools

While daydreaming to improve Project Reality once more, I stumbled over a new possiblity. I don't think it has ever been discussed before. I also wanted to speak about it in a separate thread rather than adding it to my infamous Project Reality v0.8 Improvement Compilation thread. The idea itself is simple in nature but it's possibilities may be able to expand our existing game much furthur.

As we all know, pressing the Alternate fire (Default: Keypad 0 or Right Click) is a familiar tool. We use it everytime we "Zoom" in with a Pistol, Rifle, Grenade Launcher or Missle Launcher. It can be used to control the distance on throwing hand grenades. It can also be used to switch between C4 and the Remote Detonator.

Other than the previously mentioned uses, it doesn't have many additional functions. What I'm getting at here is to expand furthur and experiment upon this. Lets create a theoretical situation:

Rifleman (Ironsight or Optics) kit:
1. Knife
Main use: Stab. (Default)
Alternate use: Restrainer or Disarm Tripflares (Only One function.)

2. Shovel
Main use: Construct friendly emplacements. (Default)
Alternate use: Deconstruct enemy bunkers and sandbags.

3. Assault Rifle
Main use: Fire weapon. (Default)
Alternate use: Enter aimed weapon mode. (Default)

4. Ammo Bag
Main use: Throw on ground to resupply soldiers. (Default)
Alternate use: Throw on ground to resupply stationary weapon emplacements.

5. Fragmentation Grenade
Main use: Throw full force. (Default)
Alternate use: Throw by controlled force. (Default)

6. Smoke Grenade
Main use: Throw full force. (Default)
Alternate use: Throw by controlled force. (Default)

7. Binoculars
Main use: N/A (Default)
Alternate use: Equip and observe. (Default)

8. Field Dressing
Main use: Directly apply Field Dressing to self.
Alternate use: Throw Field Dressing full force to another soldier.

Main use: C.P.R. (Default)
Alternate use: N/A (Default)

4. First Aid Bag
Main use: Apply First Aid to another soldier.
Alternate use: Apply First Aid directly to self.

5. Smoke Grenade
Main use: Throw full force. (Default)
Alternate use: Throw by controlled force. (Default)

6. EPIPEN
Main use: Apply EPIPEN to another soldier. (Default)
Alternate use: N/A (Default)

7. Binoculars
Main use: N/A (Default)
Alternate use: Equip and observe. (Default)

8. Field Dressing
Main use: Directly apply Field Dressing to self.
Alternate use: Throw Field Dressing full force to another soldier.

Alternate use: Enter aimed weapon mode. (Default)

5. Tripflare
Main use: Deploy Tripflare from prone position. (Default)
Alternate use: N/A (Default)

6. Wrench
Main use: Repair friendly vehicles and assets. (Default)
Alternate use: Sabotage enemy vehicles and assets, or deconstruct razorwire.

7. Binoculars
Main use: N/A (Default)
Alternate use: Equip and observe. (Default)

8. Field Dressing
Main use: Directly apply Field Dressing to self.
Alternate use: Throw Field Dressing full force to another soldier.

9. Anti-Tank Mine
Main use: Deploy from prone position. (Default)
Alternate use: Deploy from prone position. Attaches a small red warning flag beside the mine for ease of identification. Can be seen by both friendlies and enemies.

or

9. Grappling Hook
Main use: Throw Grappling Hook full force. (Default)
Alternate use: Drop Grappling Hook infront of users feet. (Default)

I could have identified more possibilities. But I wanted to keep it simple for now until more ideas and thoughts could be expanded upon.

So what do you think for starters?

Hand weapons can not be coded in the same way as vehicles etc ie, in a vehicle you can have 2 weapons, ie, main cannon and MG like in a tank, but with hand weapons, this is not possible. The only things you can code for the right click afaik is zoom and powered throw, would need a coder to confirm this for sure but I'm 95% sure its not possible to code any type of alternative weapon onto right click of a weapon.

Allrighty.

I was under the impression that because when using C4, and you switch to a remote detonator, it hinted that it could be worked on furthur.

Simply put, it seemed like a theoretically possible chance. Afterall C4 itself is one thing. Switching to a detonator and performing an action is another thing. Two different models, two different functions.

Can't help but say that it seemed promising though. Shame if it's truely a dead-end street. Certainly would open up alot more options for us.

This brings up another thought Rhino.

Rather than attaching these abilities to the Keypad 0 or Right Click buttons (Using functions similar to the use of C4.), what if we instead assigned these alternate abilities as a "firemode" (Switching firemodes for Assault Rifles.). Like when we press #3 to pick a different firemode for our weapon, is it possible to have an alternate result occur instead?

Let's say we wanted to heal ourselves with a field dressing. Rather than throwing it on the ground, we could then directly apply it to ourselves by switching the firemode by pressing #8, then left clicking (Fire) to apply it?

These different firemodes could be identified by different gestures while holding the field dressing. The current Field Dressing animation would apply it to ourselves. After pressing #8 twice, the soldier would change the appearance of his gesture to make it seem like he's "giving it away" to represent the 2nd firemode.

It would look alittle bit something like this, for example:

8. Field Dressing
Press #8 Once, and Left Click: Directly apply Field Dressing to self.
Press #8 Twice, and Left Click: Throw Field Dressing full force to another soldier.

ah you mean like that, not sure, it could work have to see what egor thinks but I doubt you will be able to put 2 weapons in like that with different types of fire modes or w/e but worth a try.

"fire modes" I'm pretty sure is not possible but would need confirming by a coder.

I still think it would be cool to have a way to swing that e-tool (shovel) as a weapon!
I remember very vividly a class while in the USMC on improvised weapons....it is realistic.
Would love to hear that "PANG" sound when it hit an enemy head!

that I can tell you for sure is not possible apart from having the shovel as 2 different weapons (1 attack 1 dig (repair) which may be possible to do that as the little clacker switch thing but I dont think that will be possible.

Hmmm....
That is an interesting thought. :idea:
C4 is placed by a left click.....right click switches to the remote detonator.....left click then controls the action of pressing the button and detonating the C4.

Could a shovel have the left click ability to build and construct.....right click to change the hand position of the shovel to "arm" it for swinging....then left click to swing?

I am no coder for sure.....it just seems like it would be possible given the C4 example. :? :

yes that is what M.Warren is suggesting more or less just with other weapons which I can not confirm myself if its possible or not.

Ah some of those things would be so wesome :D

Sabotage enemy vehicles with a wrench would be one of the best IMO, but just to grey/black smoke, imitating draining cooling fluid :D
