Squad Leader Command Map

Post by Bushrag »

Alright, I've spend quite a few rounds playing as squad leader, the one thing I've noticed is the inability to communicate between squads. While I understand it may be hard or not possible to have a VOIP channel for squad leaders, what about a command map like that which the squad uses.

Basically, have a command map only the squad leaders and commander can access, squad leaders can plot their position/objective and predetermined path to their objective. This way squad leaders can see exactly what other squads are planning on doing and adapt to the situation. The commander can use the map to keep track of squads plans. Maybe even make it possible to plot enemy positions on the map, mark enemy fire bases, etc... I think it would aid a lot with teamwork between squads and would allow squad leaders to work with one and other on planning the main assualt during the 3 minutes before a round starts.

Like youre way of thinking,
but sounds hardcoded for sure, it might be possible though.

agree, sounds great but, as with all great things, probably hardcoded ;)

So, basically, all the squad leaders are tiny little commanders... I like it! :D The only other way for squad leaders to communicate to each other is through Team Speak or Ventrilo and that's not a solution for public games. I'm open to anything that cuts down on the sometimes annoying text chat...

It could be given a try right?
If it would work out, it would move Project Reality another big step from Bf2! ;)

Thanks for the replies guys, I agree, if it "can" be done, it would move PR a big step from BF2, not that it isn't already... Who knows, if someone can work this out, maybe we can get fast ropes!!! lol

Though that's a simple solution it's probably hardcoded, as the inter squad comms thing has been discussed before.

Nice ideas all round though.

It could be easier to do if map was removed from normal soldiers, that way you'd just had to mod the map, not make a new one. And the marker system is already in use by commander so modding that shouldn't be too complicated. So only Com, SL's and vehicles would have access to maps, maybe give it to some other selected kits as well (spec ops etc.). Just a thought.

no......i dont think its good idea
BUT ! i got beter one
squad leader will have common map only squad leader will see markers of each others (i think it good idea )
then squad leaders will know where everyone go what you think ?

or if you hate the idea maybe Squad leader can have 2 markers ? 1 marker is a way point ( where need to go ) second marker will be for mark they way to get to way point of some enemys .

This will make the Commanders job more obsolete as it already is. Its the Commanders job to coordinate squads and handle inter-squad-communication, give information about enemy movement/FOBs etc.

I agree with Chuck. The CO will keep everything in his head, what all the squads are doing and decides if he wants two squads to co-operate or anything like that. The reason this is being discussed is because there seem to be less commanders/commanding since 0.8. Something I hope we'll see a change of in 0.85. The CO is the answer for inter squad communication.

Whilst I agree we don't want to remove the commander, but at least give Squad Leaders the ability to know what's going on with other squads... In real combat, squads arn't isolated from one and other, they are connected via communications, etc. And since we can't have a VOIP channel for SL's, at least give us a map to work with. It would really help communication with squads and the commander.

sounds nice, though VOIP can accomplish what you say and if moar markers are added to the map other than commander markers, I see alot of tardery happening (people already spend inordinate amounts of time drawing penises with contact icons)

Agreed to a point, what if you made common/temporary markers such as enemy position markers only last say 30 seconds, make more permanent markers such as enemy fire bases have to suggested by squad leaders and then clarified by the Commander.

Yeah, but the thing is that before 0.8 came out CO's were alot more usual (and tactical gameplay was seen more often and was better). Now whatever made them go away must be fixed so they get back. Is it because CO's must sit in the command post to command perhaps?
