Can't get PR/PRSP or BF2 to run

Post by dividebyzero »

Hello all,

First, I'd like to extend my thanks for creating such an awesome mod and adding single-player support! I've played the other versions of PRSP and had a great time with them.

With that in mind, I am dealing with some HORRIFIC installation issues.

First, my setup:

Macbook Pro using Boot Camp
Windows Vista (x86) SP 1
2.4ghz, dual core
2 gigs ram
GeForce 8600M GT

When I initially installed BF2, I was running it at 1152 x ? (forgot the exact number) with everything at high.

I installed BF2, patched to 1.41, and downloaded the PR core, maps, PRSP core, maps and patch as detailed in the instructions. First problem: it took forever to install the core and map files. Just running the installation files seemed to make it hang forever, task manager demonstrated there were two processes running associated with PR that I would have to kill. I eventually ran it in Administrator mode, which caused the installation file to take like five minutes to load before it would finally work.

I installed the Core files, then the Maps files, then did the same for PRSP and its associated map packs. Now, I'm running into an issue where the PRSP shortcut won't run, PR won't run, and now BF2 won't run at all. All I get is the screen going black like it's about to load the intro screens, then it flickers, then CTDs. I tried running everything in Administrator mode, but it hasn't helped at all. At one point, I got a "CreateProcess failed: the requested operation requires elevation" error which I have NO clue what it means.

Given the enormous headache resulted in the install process, I'm really hoping I don't have to uninstall, reinstall BF2, PR and PRSP. I'm going to try updating my video card drivers in the hope that it works, but at this point, I feel like tearing my hair out and drop kicking my Windows Vista disc all the way to Seattle.

Any pointers or hints would be helpful. I'm not sure where to go from here.

first off, welcome.

i know how you feel..

unfortunately the only idea i've got so far is a complete re-install. tbh i never had that problem, maybe one of the vista users has an idea?

Well, I reinstalled BF2, the patch, PR Core, Levels, and then PRSP and the mappacks, and it actually works- until I load a map. For instance, Korengal 64 gives me a BSOD and reboots Windows when it gets to 2% of the loading. This is seriously exasperating. I'm running it at 1024x768 and all my settings are on high. Any pointers?

What res are you running at as some peeps have trouble running it at 60hz so try it at 75hz
and if you have your Dynamic Shadows and Lighting at max turn it down to Med as it wont effect the quality whatsoever

Hi Outlaw,
Thanks for the reply! I'm running it at 1024x768 60hz. How can I change my refresh rate? 60hz is the only option there...

I'll try turning down the settings you recommended. I'll report back if it doesn't work.

Edit: I may have fixed the problem. The BSOD was listing "mdfsysnt.sys" as part of the conflict- after some quick googling, I found out that's a driver for a program I use to access Mac files when I'm using my windows partition. I got PR to run, but it kind of looks like *** even on high- I've got some tearing and some ugly vertical bands. This sounds like more of a driver issue with my video card, so I'll try that as well.

Would turning up my refresh rate help with that? My options in the BF2 screen are still limited to 60hz. Can I force my graphics card to refresh at 75hz?

Well if you don't have the option in your video/monitor control panel to increase the hz then that's probably the max it will go and should not cause any problems in that case.

Yea always keep all your drivers up to date and make sure there are no processes running in the background that you don't need.

Hi dividebyzero,
do you still have PR_SP 0.613 with its mappacks?
I am searching it desperately- I am enthusiastic about PRSP too.
Would be really great to get it somehow- I got all the newer versions already.
Best regards
