However, without going on and getting this thread locked (right away), I have a suggestion within a suggestion.
I'm no coding expert, but would it be possible to, when a helicopter gets "destroyed" (the black smoking wreck), that some portion of the occupants are not immediately killed, and instead immediately expelled to outside of the chopper?
In other, less confusing words, say you are flying low and hit the water. Immediately when helicopter gets destroyed, you find yourself outside of the cabin, and manage to swim to safety. (Maybe with damage)
Or, if a helicopter gets hit in mid-air, you would immediately find yourself either flung against the collision mesh or falling helplessly to your death.
In a third scenario, your heli hits the ground, hard. You find yourself outside the wreckage but no one else survived...
Basically, you would be expelled outside the chopper immediately when it gets destroyed. Thus there would be more epic crashes and a more realistic chance of survival. The faster you were going when you crashed, or the higher you are, you would have less of a chance of survival. In real life helicopters are not turned into smoking chunks of blackness...
I know this has been a confusing suggestion, and it most likely is hard-coded so lock it if you want

...it can't hurt to ask
