For me it takes 15-20 min to download a build of pr so for me it ok to make it A LOT bigger
But to be honest even if it would take me a week to download I would still do it.

Re: PR future file size?
The main issue people is that some players whether it be country or internet allowances do not have unlimited downloads. Not everyone is as lucky as some. And before I have people pointing there "hypocrite" finger at me its not like one level its the whole mod
We have allot of junk to remove, but with out testing or a list removing one item make break 50 other things. Allot of things are interconnected. But yes we do see the size issue and have begin working on it.

Imagine the same file is on loads of different computers, and all the computers are connected by a torrent program ie "utorrent".
Torrents split up the file into thousands of smaller pieces which everyone then shares. So as you download the file, you may be half way through, but you will already be sharing the chunks you've downloaded with other people. This means that the more people sharing, the quicker you get the file ( I often get popular torrents downloading at over half a mb a second! )
The benefits of this is that the file doesn't have to be centrally stored ( after the initial seeding ) - It also gets round the problem of people having slow upload speeds, because all the uploads combine into a "torrent" to make it quick ( You can often be downloading off hundreds of people simultanously )
To find the torrents , you use a website like piratebay, but dont use it to download illegal content, as its really naughty to do that apparently.
The last PR release took about 30 mins for me off a torrent.
PS - torrents dont work exactly like that - I simplified it to make it easier to explain.

Re: PR future file size?
Torrent is a peer sharing protocol whereby a file is divided into many small parts and those small parts are downloaded from different people at relatively low download speeds but since a well seeded torrent can have many dozens of seeders (uploaders) then the download speed can cumulatively add up to be very high.Conman51=US= wrote:can some one explain to me whats the difference between torrents and regular DLs....it takes me 45 mins each file usually on a regular DL
Torrents are a community way of sharing files. You download from everyone, even people who haven't finished the download themselves. Its like a socialist look at downloads.
My own idea is that maybe people could burn DVDs of new PR releases and ship them to people on a per-cost basis. Would be a cool idea, though shipping to some of the more exotic areas could be rather steep.
EDIT. DAMN I got nija'd.

Virgin broadband, which is one of the most popular ISPs in the UK ( and fastest - oh and most expensive
I use Sky - its £5 pm, unthrottled, uncapped, and I actually get the 8mb connection I pay for - ( plus if you call them up, they put you on "game settings" whatever that is, which brought my ping down even more. )

Not to mention that torrents reduce the risk of getting a corrupt download to a minimum, and if you do get one, its easy and fast to repair.

Re: PR future file size?
I use Shaw over here in Canada but I have a 5mb limit and it rarely goes over 4.4. Good enough to game with UKers without lag though. My fastest download seems to be around 500-600 kb/s.
I'll happily burn a DVD for anyone in the Lower Mainland. I'll ship it too as long as it doesn't cost more than a few loonies.
EDIT. @ Zrix yea totally. Because of the fragment system I guess you're able to keep the files from corrupting. If something is askew its not much to need to redownload a few pieces. Monitoring my Utorrent client right now it says my pieces are 1MB each.
I loves my torrents.

Same here if I have both downloads going at the same time. My house has cable high-speed internet that I'm connected to over a wireless network (thank successful parents for that).Bullet Rush wrote:well its time for me to show off, i can download the 0.8 (core and levels) in 45 minutes if not 30

If you are worried about file sizes in future releases of PR I recommend you to update your system/internet connection to this century.
