nooo you dont want players wading from island to island, maybe only the very small islands that are very close to other islands but that's it. you really want to make it deep enough that players must swim if they want to get to anouther island without a chopper / boat as then they are at a disadvantage, should make them want to use boats and choppers for transports on this map. and if they where on a island with no boat, then they could have the option of swimming but would be a bad one, instead they should really call for a chopper / boat / amphibious APC or w/e to pick them upAnxiety wrote:Oh!! and just to do that, all you need is shallow water (thou not shallow enough for players to wade across unless its a island right next to anouther, like ~25m apart then if you paint it as sand, once you lightmap your terrain on final and complie your colour textures it should look like that (With any luck)

Anxiety, very nice looking map. I just ran through this whole thread and want to reiterate or resuggest one thing: mangroves. Perhaps around those southern little islands you could have areas that are at wading depth but that have large tracks of vegetation (mangroves) for cover and concealment. It would had another type of battlefield that does not currently exist. Even a capable mangrove area would be cool. Put a small bunker in the middle of it that sank or that is now partially underwater due to high tide.
Also, use that huge Buddhist statue from Seven Gates.
Also, the WW2 era wrecked plane that is in the water on Wake Island would be a very nice touch to add some ambiance.
And finally, we need crocs.

I've now implemented your idea about not being about to wade from island to island. you can go about 20 m out , then you have to swim the rest of the way.

I had forgotten about that idea, and i had an island that really had nothing on it, So i morphed that island into about 15 "smaller" islands and made the whole area a mangrove-environment.
This isn't the mangrove island but it is an area i've placed mangroves

I've seen those ugly straight lines where the undergrowth means the water.. when your new " undergrowth" system comes out, would using that make it look better?( or is this another lighting issue)?

if you want the map to be at night, it really needs to be VERY dark, ie, you can't see **** without NVGs.
Unless you have a full moon then you need to do lots more tweaking of the light settings.

I'm Open to any sort of lighting - but you think that we should really steer clear of Night Maps, then i'll decide on another course of action.
If i did have a night map then it would be during a full moon.
I want the map to have maximum playability and if having it a night map will hider it. . i'll choose something else
Bottom-line do you think its worth the time and effort making it a full-moon night map?

well with a full moon setting what you want is a really dark "sky light" and a really faint "sun light" (which is the moon) so that things that are in shadow are really dark, and things that the moon is hitting you can just see which could work for this kinda setting since most of your islands are covered in trees so under the trees would be really dark.

I think i might work on all the other aspects of the map whilst i make the decision about it, I'm not too sure at the moment. .
On an off topic note ... I was looking through this travel book my friend gave me for Christmas, and to my surprise i found one of your reference pictures you posted up( the boat in the extremely shallow water)
So are you planning to keep your next map in Oman too?

The map's looking really great right now, and with a few small improvements, like the ones that've been mentioned, I think it'll turn out really well, no matter what sort of lighting you use. However, I think that as awesome as a night map would be, this isn't the right one for it. I mean, a tropical island will look fantastic under a clear sky, a night sky or under storm clouds, but I just think that a night map wouldn't fit add to the atmosphere the same way the stormy one did, not to mention the uniqueness. But hey, if you disagree, all I can say is that I'm really looking forward to you proving me wrong.

I love the idea of the map ! Very good work Anxiety ... I've found your vegetation mix well done with that combo on bamboo+palmtrees with your undergrow !
... and if you can't choose the lightning, make two different maps !
to me, the blurry-dark one will give a very good "heavy" atmosphere. And with two maps you could change your controlpoints positions, type of vehicules ...

Map looks realy good, Back in the days of the old battlefield 1942 I moded with Forgotten hope. I made some maps from the Dutch East indies (pretty mutch the same area).
I just made a very lightbleu texture, made the shalow water rings around the island and painted thoes light bleu. it wil give the same efect like the photos does, never tried it in battlefield 2, but maybe its worth a try?

is the water depth high enough in the mangroves to walk through? if so that would be a nice touch, also a random hole here and there would make it that touch more realistic with the fact you dont know when your going to sink into a hole in mangroves 
imagine a fire fight in there and you fall into a hole and have to ready your weapon again, that would rock!
