Tanks/APCs - Hull Down Position

Post by fuzzhead »

The Hull-Down

A Hull-Down is an armor tactic that uses terrain to provide cover for a tank. During this period only the tank turret is visible protruding from a hilltop. Minimizing the silhouette of the vehicle and giving significant concealment. Especially when done before high brush, trees, forestry, and other forms of concealment or cover.

How to Perform
Image

To perform a hull-down you must have a vehicle that has the ability for the muzzle to depress; meaning the tank must be able to aim down. Simply put, just drive up to a small hill and have the gunner of the vehicle aim the muzzle down as far as possible. Have the driver roll slowly up the hill until the gunner realizes the muzzle is aiming directly at the hill. Reverse the vehicle until the muzzle is effectively aiming over the hill or just above.

Tips and Special Notes

This tactic varies in effect with different vehicles. For example, a vehicle with a smaller depression will have more of a silhouette. This is because the vehicle will have to be closer to the hilltop to be able to fire over it. Most vehicles have limited options to this tactic because of how they modelled or the surrounding terrain, such as the gradient or slope of the terrain, that must be minute or very small. If the slope of the hill is too high the vehicle can no longer fire at targets approaching it position. For better results perform at a location where there is some sort of terrain depression in front of you (i.e. a valley or small dip). This will give you a vantage to fire at incoming targets and give you time to advance or relocate. This maneuver is very effective against infantry elements if correctly executed due to cover and concealment. But remember: the conditions have to be right for the tactic to be executed properly, and the odds of this of happening is greatly hindered by the ability of the armor.

A better position is periscope up - only sight above the ridge spot an enemy vehicle rolled forward to turret up fire position Bang he dies you roll back into cover. Works well on the bigger maps.

Need to get rid of super zoom though tanks only have 2 fileds of view Wide (LOWMAG) and narrow (HighMAG)

Unfortunately this valuable tactic is useless when the Abrams can be 1-shot killed by aiming at the exposed top hatch; basically an exploit in the game.

Any plans to correct EA's abrams coding/model to remove this and other 1-shot kill exploit areas of tanks?

Sounds good let get rid of the M16 as well... No seriously let replace it with a new better gun or just the British assault rifle could be a long or short term solution. Because the M16 got such bad sights bad hit reg bad every thing I would like it if it was just binned so it would never haunt me again

Another good tactic is to have an engineer roll out in an engi-car with you and move ahead as a spotter, If he is engaged at his position then general direction of enemy fire can be traced by the friendly tank he is scouting for. Also hit and move, big open maps like Kashan are centered around the bunker area which is like a huge arena of death where although the map is huge, everything seems to gather to join the power struggle. As your engi car advances in a direction and calls it in as safe, you can advance to him after making a kill, where hindering the enemys ability to call cords on you or evn worse, laze you for enemy jet bombing..

Another good tactic is for the Stryker to be the lead vehicle with the TOW Hummer.

is an excellent example of a hull down position. It saved the APC from a heavy anti-tank missile.
