I would suggest blender as it is free, and has a large user base and a reasonably large amount of documentation.

Although you may be better off with a pure modeling software thing as blender can be very confusing - especially if you're just interested in creating models for the moment.

Another Blender user here, well, not very good at it. Easy enough to learn how to do something like this in a day:

Cheers man. Only 105, so it's pretty basic - about a third as many as similar SupCom models. The Paveways it drops are 98 which makes me laugh. I'm pretty chuffed with it as my first foray into the world of modelling.

hehe, 98 polys for a bomb is pretty large for a RTS :p

I should probaly give a go at making some supcom models thou no one really downloads the mods thou can't blaim most people when 95% of mods are simply very small minimods that change like 1 thing and its basically just a cloned supcom model with different settings like it has super shields, huge cannon and super fast and really cheap and 1 could wipe out the enemy base on its own, then all users playing MP must have the mod installed before they join and can't really tell if the host is running any mods before they join :p

The latest version of python (2.6 I believe) is avaliable on the python website Python Programming Language -- Official Website
I suggests you read a couple of tutorials before you jump right in.
Blender 3D: Noob to Pro - Wikibooks, collection of open-content textbooks
That is a link to a big introduction to blender, the interface will seem daunting at first but once you get used to it you learn to love it. ;)

I dunno how blender will work with exporting to .obj (if it even can thou I would expect it to) then how well max can import that .obj but I would advise you if you want to model etc for BF2 or games in general to learn on GMax as its just a dumbed down version of 3DsMax, thou if blender can export well etc and is easier to use, might be worth learning on it but I dunno what the shift would be like from it to 3DsMax if you ever wanted to make that shift.
