Really, in my mind its so simple about what the commander needs
1) More off map support (can be done, other have done it)
2) Control of a remote controlled turret at the entrance to main base
that would do fine for me, not perfect yet...but that would do

Re: missing commander?
The commander needs people that he can actually command... He needs squads that don't have the resources or intel about the entire battlefield to rely on him to formulate the tactics. SLs can have good games without the ability to organize themselves to the degree that they don't need a commander, even if they don't perform as well.
Just take the map away from every non-SL or non-vehicle, and take the markers away from the maps issued to each SL. Now commanders could be useful and welcomed

well that would make it more realistic mcluv. i find all i do with the markers is mark enemy positions anyway. if new maps are made they need to have the grid lines stay visible when zoomed in. the current grid lines disappear when zoomed and makes it hard to call in grid cord. sometimes.

How many times do you play a match w/o a commander where every squad takes off towards a CP just to see the now unguarded CP behind you fall to the enemy. I was playing a great round of Al Jabar the other day where every squad was working together, no lone wolves, lots of comm going over text chat, but the situation was changing too rapidly, we really needed a commander to pull things together.
I agree that the CO needs to be able to work outside the command post. I think a UAV like asset that allows max zoom in a small area would be great, but if you allowed the CO to roam it would not be necessary, as the CO could get to high ground and using bino's he could spot and call down orders on the fly.
I don't like the idea of a mobile command post that requires crew, we only have 32 troops per side, 31 shooters (take away the CO), now you want to further reduce the shooters by 2, no thanks unless they serve a super useful purpose (perhaps if the vehicle doubled as a combat engineer's wagon which could build special features).
I used to command quite a bit, and I've found that if SL's don't want to listen to you you can show them you're good and they usually will. If they don't, go play somewhere else, there are lots of us who play SL's that love having a strong CO that we will welcome you to our game.
