[Question] 4km maps?

Post by PikminDoctor »

Hi!

I've made my own 2x1024 map, I'm kinda pleased with it but now I want to try something more ambitious: A 4 x 1024 map based on a real world location using the techniques I've learned from the tutorials I've read here.

The only trouble is, when I try to create the map it crashes part-way through the process of making the files and folders. I've tried to finish this process manually by copying the remaining files from other BF2 maps and replacing the map names in those files with my map name but I can't seem to get it to run with any kind of stability. Sometimes the map crashes as soon as I press 'join game' and sometimes it makes me die after 10 seconds.

Before I write a program that goes through all the folders in my map directory and replaces the word 'kashan_desert' with 'colesberg', do you have any other ideas? Maybe someone could generate a blank 1024 x 4 map called 'colesberg' on their computer and transfer it to me somehow (although I guess it would be a big file)

Help me!

If your interested in the area I'm basing my map on, check out: Colesberg - Official Website

Thanks!

(I've tried freeing up more memory, but it still doesn't work. I have 4GB of RAM, it uses Windows Vista but I've also tried this on another computer with Windows XP and it still doesn't work, although that one only has 2GB of RAM.)

try and free up as much memory as possible before crating the map, restart your PC, shut down all unneeded tasks on start up (MSN, xfire etc) then load up the bf2 editor, might be worth loading up a blank mod then make the map.

The problem is due to most likley you running out of memory when crating the map then it crashes.

The other solution could be just to buy more RAM?

oh great now all the maps I make with the editor whatever their size crash when I click 'Join Game' - this sucks. Other maps work fine...

vistia is probaly your problem tbh, the BF2 editor hates it. You might find some more info on the editor forums about how to get it to work.

Right click on the BFEditor Shortcut, and then go to properties, and then compatibility, XP SP2. That should fix it

afaik that will only get it to run, but even after doing that its still much buggyer than it normal is which it wasn't good to start off with.

Right, I'm going to install Windows XP on another partition, drive letter D. Will the BF2 Editor be able to cope with not being on the C drive?

yes, but you will need to install BF2 on that partition too.

Has anyone seen this?

It looked fine on the editor, and I'm not getting To Be Mended messages so I don't know what's going on, my UndergrowthAtlas0.dds and other undergrowth files seem to be in order, any ideas?

unlightmapped terrain and low gfx = black undergrowth, if you search "black undergrowth" on the editor forums you would have found that over 100 times I can tell you that.

sorry, I did search for exactly that but all I got was 8 results for WIP maps it didn't look like they were related to my problem, I'll try putting different keywords in or searching sub-forums, sorry for wasting your time :(

Search Results

search for black grass, look down the list of results, you see a topic even called "black grass"
