Maybe you should check for spyware cos the PR forums don't have ads anymore... or is it ever? I've been on here too long either way :|

I'm in the middle on jargon. I use lots of it but I also don't use lots of it. Some of it is very specific and meant for real situations when seconds count and you're relaying a big message. But in a game where we're constantly playing and talking with a smaller group its largely unnecessary to refer to certain terms.

Basically I feel that if you need to try to use a term then you don't need it. I always say MG just because its short and I've watched way too much Band of Brothers. I also say Roger and Say Again quite a bit.

But lots of its unnecessary. And even more has a different term that describes it perfectly. Lots of people say 'Baddies' or 'enemies' instead of 'Opfor' or 'targets' 'tangos' etc...

As long as the message is getting across then its A okay. But it is fun to use jargon and have it work.

My feeling on it is that you should read the jargon list, try to learn it just in case someone uses it on you then you can find yourself using whatever bits of it make sense.

Other military terminology is good to use as well. Instead of just saying 'we're gonna move here' you can say 'patrol in this direction' which gives the order and the task more depth than just a simple move here. It allows the SL to impart more information simply by swapping a word. Ambush is good too, instead of just saying attacking. Ambush means you don't just shoot them and storm in.

In the end though saying this **** is way too much fun to be without completely. :D

Lots of this "jargon" was developed to convey a message quickly and clearly, which is something that's important in PR as well. Some of it is redundant, and makes you seem like a dork, but some of it is useful.

Take the phonetic alphabet, for instance. Just like when using radio, you get varying quality of sound over VOIP in PR. I've actually misheard people before, thinking they said "D" when they said "B." That's why saying "bravo five" can be better than saying "bee five."

I use minimal jargon. Like when I kill an enemy I say "Tango down!"
When I see an enemy I say "Contacts 250! (for example)"
If I'm squad leader and ordering an attack, I will usually say:

Rush-move in guns blazing (don't use this one very often)
Storm-lay smoke and suppression fire while 3-4 guys move in and kill everyone
Ambush-hide, wait for enemy, then kill them when they're right on top of us

TBH, when pointing out an enemy in PR its best to just give map coordinates and enemy types. The battle only lasts 2 hours at the most, and we all know who we're fighting, no need to give a bunch of details.

My favourite PR VOIP phrases:

"Enemy, over there"
"QUICK, SHOOT HIM"
"Everyone stay low, I SAID STAY LOW!"
"Everyone who can't hear me, speak now"
"Okay, we're frakked. Do you guys wanna respawn now or in 5 minutes when that tank gets here?"

:D

"That's how it starts, Mas, with that warm happy feeling inside. Pretty soon you're rocking in the corner, a full grown dog addict, wondering where your next St Bernand is coming from..." - IAJTHOMAS
"Did they say what he's angry about?" asked Annette Mitchell, 77, of the district, stranded after seeing a double feature of "Piranha 3D" and "The Last Exorcism." - Washington Post

Whats wrong with our way of comm. Military will just jargon will just make it more confusing. Altho, I do use some of those military jargon most of the time but for casual players, its better to talk regularly with some RP jargons on top. Good read tho.

Instead of all that mumbo jumbo, since most guys on there dont get it, i do it quick n simple. For example:

"Hey, 330- 150meters out, friend or foe?"
"Cant tell, shoot him in the knee, see what he says"

One used by CAS pilots and CO's alike.

BDA - Battle Damage Assessment

Pilot: "Missiles fired, request BDA."

Spotter: "One tank down, one damaged. Re-lasing for another run."

"Die you b*******! Die!" - When screamed down a mic lets you know that Bob is discharging his pistol in the General direction of the enemy.

"Who told you to fall back?" - Warning that Bob is about to discharge his pistol in the direction of you.

"Where the **** is my ****ing air support? Theres a ****ing T ****ing 90 right on ****ing top of us! What? I don't give a damn what that MiG-29 happens to be doing! Shoot the ****ing down for all I care! Just ****ing take out this ****ing tank!" - Bob enquiring to command just why the A-10 hasn't shown up yet.

"Ok guys, the objective is over there, we are here so we're going to go over there and kill anything stuid enough to get in our way"
The key to modernising any weapon is covering them in glue and tossing them in a barrel of M1913 rails until they look "Modern" enough.

Anyone mention a "Lace" report? Its what your team leader does after a firefight.. Yes I said Team leader, in RL 2 teams make up a squad, 4 squads is a platoon, 4 platoons is a company, etc. Anyway a lace, or Ace (alot of the time the L is left out) report is so that you can check all your guys to make sure ammo is good, check for casualties and lost/damaged equip.

L-Liquid
A-Ammo
C-Casualties
E-Equipment.

I just say "enemy there xxx cordinates" or just enemy at attack marker etc. Those taking it too the degree of answering everything in a military way is alittle to serious imo. Its a game, but everyone has to do what they like only my opinion on the matter.
But for those of us who are or were in the military, its easier.

Most of the jargon posted is very american, as it seems.

I get the NATO Alfabet, and most of the basic jargon as its used in the dutch military aswell, however i think most of the stuff is quite overkill to use when playing with civi's.
