Mumble VOIP and PR (ongoing development)

Post by Rudd »

Mumble for Project Reality
Overview:
Mumble is an open source, low-latency, high quality voice chat software program primarily intended for use while gaming (simular to teamspeak and ventrillo). The difference and key aspect of mumble in relation to Project Reality is its extremely low latency compared to any other voice program and especially its Positional Audio feature, which means other players' voice will come from the direction of their character in game. This brings platoon wide tactics into the realm of possibility with PR and is a huge step forward. The Positional Audio works simular to Armed Assault's "Direct" channel (minus the audio occlusion), where the further away a player is from you, the less you can hear him (at about 60-70 meters he cannot be heard at all).

Here is the latest PR Mumble beta client and how to install it:

yeah I've heard of that program before. Never tried it though, I'm happy with ts. But it does sound interesting.

I just googled the topic, and found something that sounds even more interesting than positional audio:
Wikipedia wrote:Mumble is designed to fit into an existing social structure for gamers. As such, the server is fully remote controllable over D-Bus. Channels can be created, users moved and even new virtual servers created.

An example is included which shows how to use this integration to connect the server to a Battlefield 2 server and automatically place users in channels matching the right team and squad.
Mumble sounds way more flexible than teamspeak, and supposedly causes lower latency than ts and uses a better codec.

//edit: Just check out the Wiki:Mumble (computer software - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Overlay? Complex Channel hierarchy? Nice!

Hey cool! I'd say discussion of .blend's thread is definately a must if this program delivers on its promises.

iGi have been using for a bit. We run TS normally but have found Mumble is far, far clearer.

We are still testing and have yet to look into bandwidth use, although some people have experienced bad intalls and crashes in use to date.

holy thread revival batman

well, I've been messing with it, and its really good, much clearer than anything else.

Haven't figured out the settings for positional audio yet, but I think this will work really well.

Right now, I have it so that the sound of the person comes from their direction

but I havent got the distance settings up right yet, so I can hear people from the other side of the map.

Trying to make it so I can only talk to peeps within 5-15meters so I can talk to pilots etc.

OMG fapfapfap. This would improve teamwork so much if implemented full-scale. I doubt we'd be able to push this on all the pubbies though, lol(Wouldn't stop me from trying though :D ). But at the least it would be great for organized matches. Would be a lot easier for squads to cooperate when in close proximity. I'll have to look into this...

EDIT: ...or get every PR server to have it's own mumble server :p .

hmmm think I've found a problemo...

oddly enough the "what's this" tool wasn't working...but now it is

min distance = minimum distance to player before sound decreases

max distance = maxium distance beyond which sound won't decrease

Roll off = factor for sound decrease

Bloom = Factor for sound volume increase

mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm not sure if what I wanted is possible since the max distance only goes up to 100m

what I want is to have Mumble for chatting to nearby people and TS for far away people...but mumble really wants to be both I think.

edit...if I put the min distance to 1m, then max distance on 100m people don't hear me unless they are near me right? All I have to do is use the roll off factor to change at what distances ppl can hear me.

and beyond 100m...it won't go back to 100% volume right?

mmmm

Edit 2

thats what I'm thinking?

Bare in mind, you need to check "Expert Config" to get all those tabs that Rudd has on his configuration screen

This is an excellent piece of open source software. Better than teamspeak universally.
