I am a US player hiding in Sicily so I am often on Euro servers and quite often German servers. I hear where you are coming from Nytemire, but in my experience when my only option is a GERVOIP squad and I join, they are actually quite accommodating. I usually just get a rifleman kit so that I can operate without needing to understand everything that is going on and when the SL really needs me to do something he usually just says it to me in English. Of course, as you point out, it does detract from my experience because I don't understand most of what is being said.

I would also add that at least half the time, these (insert language)VOIP squads switch over to English when they realize that I don't speak their language.

I have been kicked from squads such as these but if the squad is called (insert language)VOIP there is probably a reason for it.

My question is why there are not more UK servers running at decent levels (player numbers) throughout the day? The german servers are usually well populated right through the whole day, which is why I play on them so much.

When I really need a Yankee fix, I hit the US servers.

To answer the Thread's question: NO.

I feel bad for only speaking one language, personally. I just don't have the time to really work on another. I took three years of Spanish in high school, but I didn't really focus on it enough.

I'm half-assedly working on Old English as it's related to a project I'm working on, but yeah...

There is no such language as 'european', there is no such country as 'Europe', there are no such people as 'Europeans'. We are all brothers and sisters of our own country, with our very different languages. That's something we should all be proud of.

While playing on a German server with some German squadmates in the "GER VOIP" squad I opened up I was made aware of this running discussion. I guess my opinion could be of relevance to the topic.

I think in PR we have to bridge the gap between the ability to communicate with everyone on the team and the possibility to communicate clearly easily and reliably with your squad. We can and should not assume that everyone playing the mod is able or willing to speak English.

English makes for a great language to bring most people onto the same page but there is no reason to exclude people are not willing or able to communicate in English for whatever reason they have.

I myself do not have any problem communicating in English and still I have the desire to play a few rounds where I can simply play with people communicating in my native language and taking to people from around my area. If this is the case I either join a GER squad or I open one. Normally I am pretty polite and flexible when non-German speaking people pop in our squad. But sometimes it is quite annoying that people with neither VOIP nor understanding of the language enter the squad and I am not reluctant when kicking those.

I think people should be allowed some freedom on how they play the game and no one should be forced to accept anyone in their squad that they do not want in there for any reason whatsoever. (Of course I think people should be reasonable when it comes to the amount of players available and the number of squads already in existence)

It may not always be the best tactical choice to limit a squad to speakers of a certain language but we can't disallow people from making suboptimal tactical choices. My ultimate advice: Find a place where you like to play with people you like to play with and enjoy the mod.

Honestly, I like learning languages. I love English and I love speaking English. I don't speak it fluently, because I have never lived on a full English speaking country.

I always play on english speaking squads, not by choice, but by lack of it.

I have already tried to join German speaking squads so I could practice my german, but I generally get kicked - with is quite understandable, since having a player that "lags" in response tends to criple the squad.

So honestly, I like language variety. Helps you practice. Don't be lazy learning new languages. They will some day be useful.

And IIRC Arabic, Spanish and Hindu all have more speakers than english...

You can't force European players to speak english on the server. Although communication with commander and between squads should be in english. Very hard for French, German, Durch and Swedish squads to understand each other otherwise. :p

I think it is completely arrogant to EXPECT
people to speak one particular language over another.

That being said a bit of understanding, co-operation and patience
is required to ensure that we all get the most out of the game.

I am from the UK and English is my first language, I am fortunate
enough to understand basic Swedish, German and French.
It helps, but it's not essential. The Commo Rose and move markers
go along way to breaking through the language barriers and
the only thing you may miss out on is some of the general banter
and descriptions. But that will not hinder your experience too much.
Finally, if a server is based in a particular country, I think it is
perfectly reasonable for that language to be the primary method of communication.

Or perhaps we should all learn Esperanto!
(Not old enough to know what that is??)
Esperanto - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Or even learn a few words in other languages! :)

FYI: You, correctly translated back, wrote: "Hello, can I pick up the sniper?" just like he would lay on the ground like a penny and you ask him if you can take him in your pocket :)

I am German and play on typical German servers most time (except they are full or I don't like the maps, then I play somewhere else), e.g. Thors Brigade, 10th, Pimelterror etc. and yes, on this servers I see a lot of "GER VOIP" squads etc. BUT on the other servers I played at I couldn't point out such a majority of German squads, mostly they are named "VOIP" or "INF_TW" or similar...

...depending on the age of the players many Germans are not really able/confident enough to speak/write English, at least that's what I've experienced...

If you join a server then you mostly have to accept the language from the owner-country, e.g. playing on HeroS also is strange for me because many of them only speak French and I'm not able to understand them xD
