Your First Experiences with PR?

Post by Stemo »

Don't you also kind of miss when you were new to PR? Don't get me wrong, I love PR and I play it everyday, but I miss the realistic feeling of dissorientation you got from not knowing the maps. Especially the really big maps.

You got orders from your squadleader to clear the area behind the hill infront of you, and you really had no idea what was behind it. Could be a large town, or big beautiful fields.

And because you didn't really know the gameplay, the squadleaders order felt really unique aswell. "We are gonna builda firebase? really? Oh, I got a showel!"

Every time you played, the experience was unique, Just because you had no idea what to expect.

Now you kind of know what's around you, and what needs to be done, because you have played the map oh so many times before. It's still way more unique and varied then most other games. I just miss when it was all new and fresh... :)

What experiences do you remember? That was really mindblowing and sucked you in to the game?

I was new to BF2 and PR at the same time back in January 2008. In my first game I started at a main base and was looking around for about 30 seconds when someone came around the corner and shot me. When I came back in the game, I shot the first person I saw, thinking it was a free for all. The bad news was I shot a Admin from the server on my own team.... Instant ban... I laugh now, but I was frustrated back then!!! :-P

Haha yeah I remember that as well, how hard it was to tell wich one was enemy. I ended up dubblechecking my map over and over again, until I finally got killed by the apparent enemy :P

My first experience with Pr was when i read the article about it on the gamerzone website, it was a PRMM back then, it was PR 0.1 (haha) and you still had HUDS, and...well the only thing you didnt have was a map and a cross-air...that was it...everything else was the same :p

my first every match on PR was with 4 people on GloryHoundz, Fuzzhead is a name i can clearly remember... :p

i joined the forums a little late, and then became a tester, then i made some maps, more testing then played on the new basrah, done the PR movie with Maistro, then PC blew up and havent played ever since...

Mine was in .322 and it was pretty easy to pick up since they hadn't changed much by then, the phenomenon you speak of only really works if you turned up in the more recent versions.

0.4 for me, it was kinda like Vanilla, but starting to get quite a bit different, I can't even remember what map it was tbh, but I played it very unregularily, maybe once a week before I went back to vanilla, but the first time I truly enjoyed a map was EJOD in 0.5(i think) and then started to get into it a lot more

Funny that this will also be my first post in this forum, have just registered. :-)

I was never much of a BF2 vanilla player, too much typical gamers on the servers for me, which spoiled the atmosphere. So I tested out PR, which was at that time 0.5 or 0.6 beta (so I'm not exactly a veteran ;) On my first round I was pretty nervous, because it was already mandatory to join a squad, and I didn't want to screw anything up. unfortunately, not having read the manual, I did a lot of typical no-go's and noobs mistakes, such as testing out kits to see the new weapons and it didn't even occur to me that there were now such things as ralleypoints.

I read the manual soon after it though.

PRMM oh how I hated that name :-P

Mine was coming from Desert Combat saying "Is this the next thing" in BF. While I didn't play much in the beginning (Project Reality Mini-Mod 0.1) as it was too much fun playing vanilla I slowly started to loath it, vanilla that is.

It wasn't until .4 that I really stated to play again and turned off vanilla.

Played Security Area a lot, loved the junglyness but can't really remember too much. Tanks and TOWs. Used to play it back then just for the sound, would take my PC downstairs when the parents went out and hook it up to the Quads and turn it up bloody loud. Had my first team-kill-tastic-time on the old Muttrah, at the base of the building site heading towards docks. The new feeling was rather great, mainly because PR was what I was looking for from BF2 in the first place. Had the new feeling again most recently with the release of 0.8 - the game just didn't look like BF2 at all by this point and the maps were fantastic.

Yeah, I started playing right after the 0.8 release, Which I saw on a news post on a gaming website. So by then it was a huge step from vBF.
Another thing that I noticed pretty fast was the maturity of the community, making it possible to actally play realisticly, which is something I had been dreaming of ever since Operation flashpoint.

i had the exact same thing as scot did, i started out in 0.4 and i loved the sounds and feel of the guns, but it was still to much like vanilla and i never really got into it that much. then 0.5 came out, and i distinctly remember loading the map and have my computer freeze on me because it couldn't handle Al Bashra back then (upgraded a lot since then. it was just this epic feeling of getting in a blackhawk and have it drop me into the combat and i was killed along with my squad within 10 sec of touchdown. I occasionally went back to play nilla with my clan at that time, but by the time of the 0.6 beta i was hooked, i played as often as i could and began understanding the game fully (tactics etc). by the time of the release of .7 i was playing as squad leader most of the time and was just getting the hang of it. now by 0.8 i feel that i'm one of the better squad leaders in the community (not trying to show off) and have had 6+ people contact me through the game or the community so that they could play with me again and be a SM of my squad. it's a very satisfying feeling and i love it when i get a few guys in my squad that are new to the game but knows it and are willing to learn, no greater feeling than helping them like people helped me back in the day.

Remember the PRMM. Started from 0.3 playing regularly several times a week, feel like vanilla, more punch in the weapons of course. Today? A new game. Looking forward to 1.0 and the factions.

My first experience was in .3, where you could spawn as laz0r accurate Support gunners and raep.

Needless to say, I got raep.

Well, I'd known her for about 6 months through a friend, we talked a lot on the phone and online but didn't really see much of each other, mostly as she lived abroad most of the year. Over time, we became really close and she came to visit for a weeke...

...oh, wait... wrong first experience.

Uh, 0.3 I believe. Uber lethal support gunners, and played on Road to Jalalalalalaaaaaabaaaad IIRC. Got utterly beaten into the ground but loved it.

Im just starting to play PR, always wanted to play it back when i used to play BF2 SP, then went 2 cod4 n stuff but w/e.

first impressions: sweeeeet, love the teamwork n stuff, wish there could be cross squad comms but thats hardcoded i believe. The game is freakin great, except for when some dude pops out 15 yrds infront of you and you have an ACOG on your m16, and he has an AK w/ irons...yeh

project reality does not love CQB :-| , i feel the guns are far too inaccurate at close ranges, it ends up being a fight where you single shot a half clip at someones head at 15 yrds, hes doing the same thing and all the bullets are going around the guy...

oh and the black flickery textures on all the big maps kinda annoys me but thats to be expected when using this archaic engine i guess.

first time i played (no idea what version) but it was on Strike at Karakand and it was basically no crosshair, higher weapon damages, and a rudimentary bleeding system (this is before the addition of the OMGWTFLOL littlebirds). Im pretty sure since i was sniping with an M95 unlocks still worked.
