Show us your favorite IED spots

Post by charliegrs »

I am one of those people who just loves playing the part of the insurgent. My favorite weapon is the IED. Although it often takes patience, the reward is very satisfying when you blow up an APC full of troops and your teammates see it happen. Anyway I have a few favorite spots to set my IEDs and Im sure some of you do too. So share them with us, and all us E-surgents will be even more lethal and the coalition will be even more careful about where they drive

Il start off with a classic that many people already know about. The map is Al basrah and location is the main bridge just south of the british main.
Image

I actually prefer to place my IED just after the bridge instead of right on it. The reason being that its much easier to hide the IED in the debris near the concrete dividers than right on the bridge where it sticks out like a sore thumb
Image
Right here is good.

Theres a little house just east of the bridge {where the red arrow is pointing on the map picture above} that makes a perfect hiding spot and still gives you a good view of where your IED is placed
Image

You can go inside the shack, and lay down facing the bridge and no one can see you if they are heading south down the bridge. And by the time they cross the bridge they would have to look directly east to see you, and by then they will be right on top of the IED. The signpost above the bridge makes a perfect landmark to know where your IED is.
Image

The only downside to this location is that it is well known, and the more savy british players will shoot up the shack with APC rounds before they cross, or after 1 or 2 IED hits they may skip this bridge all together and head towards the double bridge to the east. Which brings me to my next favorite infidel killing spot..

Image
The double bridge is used to cross the river almost as much as the main bridge. For this reason it also makes a great IED spot. Again I like to place my IED just after the bridge instead of directly on it for a number of reasons, including standing out on the open on the bridge making myself an easy target. Theres a spot just south of the bridge, right next to the light posts that I use to place the IED:
Image
The rocks on the ground help to conceal the IED and placing it here gives you a perfect vantage point for the hiding spot which is the bridge to the east:
Image

Image
A tactic I use is to drive a bomb car to this bridge after picking up my artillery IED kit. I hide the car, once I use my IED, I can then wait for another vehicle to pass and then ram it from behind with the bomb car. (9 times out of 10 the enemy vehicle will not be looking backwards and they wont even see you coming, and if they do they have very little time to react.

After I place my IED on the spot mentioned earlier, I usually go prone at this bridge, facing the IED. Its a very concealed spot, even if brits are in the refinery they probably wont notice you due to the fencing. Once a vehicles passes the light post, its within IED radius and you can hit the switch.
Image
Every once in a while a vehicle will go off the road, but most times they stay on it and you can get the kill. And if they do go around, hop in your bomb car and chase them down. This spot is especially useful if someone has already blown the main bridge as the brits will be more likely to take the double bridge.

Some maps are better for IEDs as they have more choke points. Al basrah is perfect in this sense. So if anyone else has some favorite spots, feel free to share.

Fallujah West: I usually hide around their mainbase. Perfect spot is of course the bridge outside their main exit. There is a steel bar sticking out which forms the perfect hiding spot for a proximity IED, people drive over it all the time going in both directions. For a regular IED, I usually put it a bit a closer to the entrance, where there are some rocks you can hide it behind. If you want to be a real *******, there are some rocks at the rear entrance which do a great job at hiding a proximity IED too.

you see, this is why i never use the big bridges, and when i use the litte ones, i have people search it for ieds.
also, i always put some shells on the buildings near the bridges, in case someone hides there. The best part is that insurgents have to walk for fucking ever to get back there.

Now, where I always put my ieds is that curved road in d6. its AMAZING how many people drive through there and there is ALOT of cover around.

Heres another pretty well known spot but nonetheless its very effective for IEDing.

I find ramiel to be one of the more difficult maps to use IEDs on as there are so many roads and so many different paths the americans can take that you may end up waiting forever for someone to drive over your bomb unless you put it in one of the spots that the americans enter the city from. the most likely entrance they take is the main road that runs through the center of the city. its long, narrow, and offers plenty of hiding spots for both you and your IED.
Image
Image

just north of the city entrance is a blue car, thats usually where i like to hide my IED
Image
Image

and theres no shortage of places for you to hide. once you see a vehicle near that blue car, let er rip!
Image

proximity mines are also useful on this road due to its narrowness.

a thought just occured to me, what if used a C4 like an ied as one of the conventional factions? on a us vs mec map for example, NO ONE would be expecting to get ieded. it may work quite well. the c4 isnt too hard to hide, and it packs a huge explosion. i think i shall try this and report back on the results..

On Fallujah i like to scout around seeing where squads are going then have them chase me then i quickly hide an IED in a bush or anything close then find a spot to hide and as soon as i see them by that bush BOOOM! whole squad down from one ins

You should also try placing multiple IEDS for a huge *** explosion.

C4 works well in conjunction with mines when playing as conventional forces.
Last night on C&C Fools road we ambushed a truck on the north road.
I placed on mine visible in the road, another hidden in the grass and C4 on the wider shoulder.
I missed the truck by a half second when it went by but the explosion was enough to push the truck out of control where it drove off the road and we shot the driver.
Especially when you don't have easy access to supplies, use the mine as a decoy and the IED/C4 as the killer.
Put the mine in an obvious spot with an easy way around it, and put the charges on that easy path.
And if you have access to supplies, like a cache, you can build a mine field and then daisy chain the IED's behind that so when they stop for the mine field......say g'night Gracie.
Even better with some inf to mop up.

Yea i love putting them behind rocks on the road or something to block the view of a mine/IED on the road. It's always fun to wait and wait and then finally BOOM, your waiting has been successful.

I'm a huge fan of those arches on the likes of Basrah in the west slums with the two stories by VCP, and on Ramiel with the entrances to the city. Someone's bound to use those beaten paths to get in, and with enough IEDs, it'll be a smoke cloud with a wreck underneath it all. :D

There's no such spot as a bad IED spot, except at a cache. :p Place 'em anywhere and amaze your friends.

Only in Project Reality (< marketing lie.).

I used C4 as an IED on sunset city all the time, especially if I'm chinese.

Throw the mine in the water crossing by the bridge and place the C4 next to the railing on the bridge. Blow up the first vehicle that starts going on the bridge and the next vehicle will generally decide it's safer to take the water route....

On an earlier note I really thing that insurgents should be able to place their IED where ever they can with out getting killed. Asymmetrical warfare is the whole point of an insurgent vs an uniformed enemy. Vehicles should always have infantry walking ahead when leaving the base or crossing bridges to check for IEDs.

C4 is underused on most AAS maps. I've been trying to fix that. I'll add some stuff to this thread once I can. Comp issues atm.

IEDs work very well on Mestia. With all the trees, the Russian apcs are very limited to their travel paths, so there are lots of good locations to lay mines, or ieds. The road leading up to west flag on mestia is ideal. You can stick them on the ramp on the way up, or the crossroads. You never expect ieds on aas, so you nearly always get the first one or two apcs they send up
