Helicopters on Forest Maps
Not a suggestion, but a discussion, and perhaps a poll, on whether or not there should be maps like Assault on Mestia or Fools Road and Kozelsk with attack helicopters. I for one would love to see them, the heavy tree line would force teamwork with the squads on the ground to designate targets. On its own it would be mildly effective, but with infantry support it could be a powerful asset.
So what do you guys think, should there be heavily forested maps with attack helicopters, or not?

I'm using those maps as an example because of the heavy treeline, though Fools Road does have the Helicopter Airbase

Yeah kozelsk is perfect for a hind.
Fools could work pretty well also.

Not too sure about a chopper on Fools.
I get the impression that the map was designed so that people either have to slog through the forests on foot or "act the fool" and take the risk of driving a vehicle along one of the few roads. Isn't one of the main design points of this map setting up convoy ambushes? RPG's from the treeline...
I think being able to buzz around the map in a chopper whould make it a bit easy - especially since there are few good drop zones except close to, or right on, the flag zones.
But I do agree in some respects, chopper drops are fun. Not so keen on having to rely on them as one of a minimal set of ways of getting into the game (as in starting on a carrier without just one or two boats or APCs), but they are great to have as a option on more maps. Just not sure if Fools is one of them.

This isn't about the specific maps, they were only an example due to the treeline.

+1. Everytime I capture Airbase on that map, I start wondering when the chopper will spawn

Would love to see a MI-28 on fools road instead of the missle BRDMs. The hind would work for kozelesk because it wouldn't be easy to use because of the lack of open landing zones and wooded terrain that would give cover. Although i would not be happy to see them on wooded maps if the opposing force got insane numbers of SA-7 and stingers like on karbala.
PR hasn't got a a proper mi-24 hind model although polish faction might bring some forest maps with a mi-24(i dunno i am just guessing).

um kozlesk? Are you sure buddy?
Has anybody else noticed that nobody likes that map? Everytime it comes on rotation, you can see everybody typing in chat, CHANGE MAP!!!!
The work and effort that went into it is great, but its just not a favorite.
But in addition, the chechnians are screwed as it is, and u want to give the Russians an attack helo?! Then everybody will leave the server.
I also cant imagine an attack helo in places like seven gates and the likes. I think its great as it is now and for reasons the devs have thought of carefully.

Speak for yourself. I find that many folks love this map and it has actually primed the server I normally play on more than once. Most folks do not know how to play the Militia correctly, but when they do this can be a great map.ralfidude wrote:um kozlesk? Are you sure buddy?

I think transport helos would be neat on some maps, but attack helos on every map screams vanilla to me.

You mean the RUSSIANS are fucked if chechenya blows the bridge and then watches the coastline for incoming apcs. Attack helicopter if we could add some AAA guns for the Chechnya's. That + sa7 would make it an interesting approach.ralfidude wrote:um kozlesk? Are you sure buddy?

And you dont need militia like forces to have forest maps.. Consider MEC vs Britain with a dense forest: No tanks, apcs and copters for attack and apc ambushes.
Ooh, there's an idea. If not attack copters, what about a transport scout heli for Russians?

Eh, on what server would that happen? Have played some very nice rounds on Kozelsk, imo it's the best 0.85 map. By far.ralfidude wrote:um kozlesk? Are you sure buddy?

And I wouldn't call the Chechen team "fucked up". You can easily halt the advance of the Russian armour by destroyinh bridges, then play with their BTRs in the forests. RKG-3s and PPShs are perfect for ambushes on vehicles and infantry.

IMO, Kozelsk is perfect playground for Hind.
Somehow, way of battle goes like this: Russian INF rush into woods, Chechens hold them with techs and light mechs, then Russians come in with BTRs, Chechens answer with RPG/RKG ambushes, Ruskies bring in heavy armour, and then Chechs blow up the bridges, after which battle of attrition gets into game. Pretty lame, if you ask me. Hind would change whole thing upside down - land hopping with gunship cover would dissolve Chechen defensive lines, after which Russians gain momentum, and instead of slow gameplay, we have quick paced shift of frontlines.

Attack choppers on forest maps may be OK, just as long as there are quite a few access roads (or at least accessible off road opportunities) so that you can get technicals tucked away for defence. If there are only a couple of forest roads which are very hard to get off, all an enterprising attack helo pilot would need to do would be to cruise the length of roads continually to take out any serious opposition. Then the remaining cowering infantry would be nothing more than little snacks with an occassional lumpy bit (manpad).
So I guess it would need to be a really big forest to give the helo-less team a chance. Either that, or have more maps like Qinling : a large patchwork of forest and open plain.

Erm what? With the exception of Asad Kahl it seems to be the most popular. And the chechens are much better than the russians are at infantry have you tried playing skirmish between the 2? Chechens always pwn...ralfidude wrote:um kozlesk? Are you sure buddy?
