Altitude meter for parachuting

Post by foob »

i was noticing in v0.85 that a pilot needs 2 things (a pistol)
and an altitude meter, so when u jump u can see wat altitude ur at
its realistic so i dont see why it wouldnt fit in with the project reality concept..

and whilest fun its tense from the moment you release your chute and start counting, you just hope you can reach 30 seconds before you hit the ground lol

Pilots had pistols... they got removed because people would load up with the pilot kit and go bail out behind enemy lines to pistol enemy troops and seize their kits.

As for the altimeter - you have one in your aircraft before you bail out, you should know if you're going to be high enough! Not worth the time or effort to make an altimeter to tell you... maybe four or five people bail out from an aircraft at altitude each round, at most?

Germans are getting an air insertion map aren't they? And if you're getting rolled over by pilots, you deserve what you get.

Well, pistols were extremely overpowered compated to rifles in 0.8, even officers used their pistols instead of their rifles. The pilots actually had a chance because of their low deviation. (And we all know the lol-epic-ninja-pilot-squads)

nice idea, How about a altitude meter on the wrist, as in a slot on the weapons list:

unarmed
smoke
altitude gauge
bandage

Kinda like a watch but with the numbers representing altitude, realistic eh?

^Like your idea, with these changes^

Maybe give the pilot a GPS weapon, that just shows Alt, heading(can be done with a heavily modified compass) and maybe speed just because GPS will have that and for the lols.

... but why. An alt has absolutely no practical function for the pilot once he's bailed out! It's not like he needs to know when to deploy - you do that ASAP or die, usually - it's not like he needs to know when it's safe to switch off bottled oxygen or anything like that...

...You bail out, you hit 9 or whatever, you wait to hit the ground. You can't even have an altimeter that gives you height above ground, only height above the map's water-level!

The longer you're in the air, the greater the target you present. While you're in the air you can't hide, you can't dodge, you can't run. The enemy can pick you off easy, or they can wait for you to hit the ground and pick you off. Allowing pilots, and paratrooopers when airborne maps are finally introduced, to wait until the last safe second to pull the cord gives them greater survivability.

Pilots should be damn grateful they're out of their aircraft alive.

Paratroopers would be dropped by a pilot, flying an aircraft, who does have an altimeter. All they have to do is bail out - the pilot controls the height they're leaving the aircraft at.

Point is, modelling, texturing, importing, and animating an wristwatch with an altimeter on it is a lot of effort for something that's basically functional for a very small number of players on a very limited number of maps. Bigger priorities out there!

Or, you can put in a placeholder that just brings up the altitude display, like with the knife before restrainers were in. There's always a temporary easy way to do it.

off topic but I disagree. You do deserve getting owned by a pilot if you suck that bad. Did you not notice parachutes fall a little bit slow and you can easily shoot him while he is gliding down and he cant aim worth a **** while he is doing that?
