Tracers w/ lase

Post by Spuz36 »

I was reading the recent Tank with Laser target capability treads, and after watching some CAS strikes, I thought of a nifty idea.

Watching many combat videos online, troops on the ground often shoot tracer rounds at a building/area for Helicopters or other air support to attack. Since tracers are hard to spot from mid air currently, could you attach a lase signature on the rounds (tracer) so they give the Box like a lase mid air? They would never completely lock to the target, but it would give the Pilot/gunner more a sense of direction of attack. It would look something like a GLTD trying to lase a target, but keeps pressing the send button. Think this would also be more realistic than Attack Markers.

Maybe this could only be added for higher caliber like .50.

Unless I have this completely backwards and they only do it for suppression?

Some Sources:
YouTube - Cobra Attack on House
LiveLeak.com - Hellfire on Taliban hideout - Afghanistan
Many more out there.

I'm just wondering if this would be possible on the engine, and what views on this. In a sense it could just be worthless by calling out a grid coordinate. Twas an idea ;)

Just think of all the bombs that will misguide and land on your head.

"oh, they're fire and forget all right...they're fired then they forget where the target is"

I wasn't thinking they would stay live long enough to lock to, but i suppose a launched bomb could get confuzzled :?

That is unrealistic and will not work. As alex said, bombs will fly all over the map and hit somewhere they're not supposed to hit.

And imagine you want to lock on a target and tracers fly around it all the time. You wont get a lock on anything.
