Re: I hate "black hole" squads.
I find myself being squadleader more and more, but think about it. We, the forum goers, for the most part, are the veterans of the .85 Vanilla Nub invasion of ot-nine. If this were the real military, we'd be the ones promoted to squad leader or officer. I don't mind really, since I'm a ground pounder all the way (No, I don't want to fly in the bullet magnet heli that I did not call for, thanks for giving away my position).
Everyone wants to easily kill their opponent but nobody wants to be the one easily killed. That line of thinking escalates weaponry to the point where practically every soldier has a shoulder-mounted nuke launcher that when fired, automatically displays the text "pwnt".- [R-CON]Wolfe

Never underestimate pub players.
This happened on the Chicago server. Never played with them before. We cleared out 3 or 4 cahces.
Brilliant teamwork. Thank you squad mates if you read this. Was a hell of a round.

Re: I hate "black hole" squads.
Well the VBF2 add didn't help the nilla invasion problem. When I try to lead squads nobody follows my orders
Well I will try to lead squads as soon as the game starts, but I kinda suck as SL. The game is simply not fun anymore.... When I joined PR in 0.8 teamwork was is most of the servers I joined. But now in 0.85 teamwork is becoming scarce... Admins need to start clearing out black hole squads, and people have to get past the clasic "ZOMG LOTS KILLS OVER THERE FUCK SQUAD LEAD!!!!!!". If this keeps up I will have to temporary leave PR......

I know what you mean so much, I see so many squads like that and when I make a VOIP squad and people join they dont have a make or they dont know how to listen to orders so when they die they either leave the game or go to a random squad.

Well, if they aren't being teamplayers just kick them or (if you really want to be harsh) shoot them in the face with your pistol while screaming at them "THIS IS NOT BF2!!! LEARN TO PLAY WITH A SQUAD!!"

Also, though, it seems the vast majority of "serious" PR players confuse role-playing army with making sound tactical decisions in game. The number of times you end up in a squad with some guy who is convinced he's leading a platoon through 'nam is embarrassing. They're so in love with the "reality" part of the project that they are totally oblivious to the fact that pissing around wasting time is a great way to lose a round. In real life, keeping you and your guys alive might win wars and be your best bet. In the game you can run halfway across the map, get shot, res, and be right on back to where people are camping in the time it takes your squad to cover HALF that distance while they're fannying about sniffing bushes and making formations, and junk. It's no wonder people lone-wolf when the squad leader's splitting the squad up into "fireteams" and telling people to advance to THIS ROCK HERE etc and getting the whole squad wiped out by distracting them from the important business of "Get here, keep eyes open, shoot anything that moves as there's no friendlies between us and the target."
And don't get me started on the cowardly medics... I don't even trust the ones in my squad, I'll just give up and run back to my corpse while they're hiding in a hole crying about bearings. At least I won't be sitting just where the enemy expect us while they're outflanking your little tea-party...

Re: I hate "black hole" squads.
Two things:
1) Remember, people will join your squad if there is room and you have an effective forward rally point. They pay no heed to the title of your squad.
2) Noobs are noobs. I was a noob and so were you. Be patient and educate them in a mature and friendly tone and you may get somewhere. Being a squad leader is as much a lesson in people management, diplomacy and tact as it is being a tactical genius. I am all of the above :O )

Re: I hate "black hole" squads.
agree with Jevski... new players can be just as good as veterans (and in many cases, alot more patient and willing to follow orders).
Yes there will always be new players coming in who dont really know what their doing, so if your feeling adventurous, create a squad and see what these green necks can do
Often times the results may be surprising, they just need a bit of leadership!

THANK you, finally someone noticing this as well. But it's usually the cas on US servers, so that's ok I guess... as I only play on european ones, because of the ping issue.Ace42 wrote:Also, though, it seems the vast majority of "serious" PR players confuse role-playing army with making sound tactical decisions in game. i agree that some people get WAY to caught up in the game.Ace42 wrote:Also, though, it seems the vast majority of "serious" PR players confuse role-playing army with making sound tactical decisions in game. but the whole "fireteams" thing can actually be pretty useful. The way i usually do it (if im squadleading), ill take two medics, a grenadier or a marksman (only one, not both) one riflemen and an automatic rifleman.
Team 1 will be the one riflemen and the automatic and one medic.
Team 2 will be me, the grenadier or marksman and the medic.
Ill usually have team one move in front while team 2 hangs back. That way if anyone tries to ambush us, they might be able to take out team 1, but i can take team 2 away and drop another rally if i need to, or use my grenadier/marksman to put long distance fire on the enemy.
If i do this, i very rarely get my entire squad killed.

Re: I hate "black hole" squads.
Those people will get annoyed from the limited kits and the fact that hostiles dont come rushing in your scope and leave the mod sooner or later.Ace42 wrote:If you've played with pick-up groups in publics, you've prolly seen it. Squad number 1, full of people, one's a sniper, one's driving an APC, one's trying to take a chopper, the squad-leader's got a grenadier kit and no mic, there's six lone-wolfers in the squad, and even though some of them would prolly be happy to squad-up, go VOIP, and play tactically, it's not possible within that squad. Squad 2, exactly the same, full of 1-man armies just squaded up for the limited kits. Squad 3, empty - even though the squad leader's doing a decent enough job, he made the squad mid-round and no-one's going to join him; squad 4 or 5 is named "chopper" or "armor" but isn't actually in either of those because someone grabbed their asset, and they're camping the main. Then you're left with "Arapahoe VOIP" + "Cymraeg VOIP", each with two men a piece in them.
So, you form a squad "Eng VOIP", maybe even sweeten it with "Eng VOIP+teamwork", and then you find yourself going "hmmm, great, the three unassigned are prolly AFK, and everyone is already in a useless squad, so aren't going to join mine on the off-chance that I actually know what I am doing..."
It really sucks that the majority of players gravitate towards the top squads, only join 'big' squads (for the limited kits, for the rallies, etc), irrespective of their tactical position on the map or their effectiveness in combat, and are generally pretty complacent about teaming up; and most of it is down to selfish squad-leaders not disbanded a squad they have no interest in leading. If I have slackers in my squad, you can guarantee they'll get kicked so they can form a helicopter / APC / transport / whatever squad of their own.

Re: I hate "black hole" squads.
@ace:
for some people it's part of the fun not leaving anyone behind.
i like to play slow and deliberately which, when my squad is with me on that and stays on edge, works fine. what i mean is: don't attack if you know that there'll be an APC coming in 2 minutes that can help you. There is a squad building a FB but struggling to fend off the enemy? find an overlooking position and support them. you know you have to hold a position? get a FB up and build defenses. you know you're gonna attack soon and flags are safe so far? fall back to main and reload vehicles/kits, then move out to target.
this works especially well as USMC on insurgeny. you don't know where a cache is? build a FB in a nicely defendable position and get some kills. you know where the cache is but its position is not identified yet? stay back a little in a nicely defendable position, get some kills and try to guess where the cache is (usually after some minutes you'll notice
).
if this is done properly you can get amazing results K/D ratio wise while having the fun of nicely coordinated teamplay since there is time to coordinate if you take it slow. flanking elements are obviously part of all of this but taking a slow pace pays very often.

You have to remember that everybody in Reality mod is a BF2 player. Seriously though, I know exactly what you mean. It sucks.
