-The CO should not be relaying messages between squads, he should be commanding the team. The problem right now is that there's no incentive to actually listen to the CO because of some changes making the position irrelevant. But that is another discussion entirely.RedSparrow wrote:I don't think there should be SL to SL communication with mumble.. Because otherwise having a commander would be completely pointless really. And I like being commander! I like being helpful, relaying messages and keeping the different SQs aware of the movements across the battlefield.

Re: Mumble VOIP and PR (ongoing development)
I was slightly disappointed by mumble tbh.
Id much rather see something that encouraged the commander spot to be taken. The main problem with BF2 VOIP is that theres no inter-SL chat - that problem is solved with an effective commander, and its makes the communication channels much cleaner.

Its useful occasionally, and theres some nice gimmicks, but it also has several flaws imo.gazzthompson wrote:what where you expecting ?? it helps communicate with people thats not in your squad = win.
These flaws would be become more of a problem, as more people started to use it.

Unless your commander is talking to all squads at once, that's not much cleaner
I kid, I kid.
But I think mumble is great for getting squads organized together. Even with a commander, if squads can't physically talk to one another when they're nearby, it's impossible to organize on any more than a squad level. I at first thought of the commander in a much different light, but now I see him as the one who should be guiding the battle, in the sense of who'll carry what, but in the sense of assembling "fireteams" by combining squads into one force, such as an APC and Mechinfantry squad. Then organizing the Recon teams to work in a particular area. Neither Commander nor Squad leader should be unaccepting. The commander should always listen, and entice SLs to report their POV in the battlefield. The SL should also listen, because they can't see the battle as a whole from the same POV as the commander.
Though I find it amusing who you said "I'd be on the field as well if I wasn't eating my dinner"

I agree, though I think it should be advertised after some issues are worked out, and it's made more user friendly with the official settings already in.

Definitely agree with both of you.. I'm astonished by the lack of TG mumblers, it's as if it never existed and Teamspeak was better! I actually commited the sin of not playing on TG this weekend.. what the hell is going on with me?DeltaFart wrote:I feel lik I'm being ignored in the claim that we ned more advertising for this thing. But playing PR + mumble + devs on TCombat was just awesome. I rarely had anything close to that in the past, even in organized clans. Would be amazing to see those advertised Mumble nights more often!

Re: Mumble VOIP and PR (ongoing development)
We are waiting on some of the problems with mumble to get sorted, if they can get sorted expect a big media blitz about the use of mumble.
Consider the current incarnation of mumble as a beta "trial" run, even though for most people it works great and you can see the great potential here.
Like tannhauser said, it definitely brings up teamwork considerably for "teamwide" tactics, not just squad level tactics, so there is no dispute about its usefulness wrt to PR.

the best thing about it imo is that pilots/drivers can actually talk to their passengers. Anything else is gravy

Cool, great news! As you said it looks we are all exited about the potential of mumble but as this excitement fades away, problems seem more apparent.[R-DEV]fuzzhead wrote:We are waiting on some of the problems with mumble to get sorted, if they can get sorted expect a big media blitz about the use of mumble.

Well going to another squad leader and talking to him about the way to proceed, communicating with an APC that gives you transport and fire support... tons of things really are useful.Dr2B Rudd wrote:the best thing about it imo is that pilots/drivers can actually talk to their passengers. Re: Mumble VOIP and PR (ongoing development)
Can I ask where the official Mumble server is hosted??? I am trying to set a little private one for my clan coming from a free source (practice and training) and I have a great ping on yours compared to mine...
Also, do you think that one of the devs playing and setting the acl of your servers could give me some basic tips to set up my channels? I am getting the basics but I would like to know things like : how they did the squad leader "radio" channel for one
This software is great but it is so unintuitive

Re: Mumble VOIP and PR (ongoing development)
Going along with the theme that seems to be present that mumble = talking and the current in game voip = radio I think it would be neat if when mumble were eventually integrated into the game firstly that the enemy COULD here what you were saying over it (which I know has been already mentioned, but more importantly that
anything you broadcast over the radio were simultaniously broadcast through mumble although with the volume reduced just as talking in a radio in real life requires actual talking. That way the enemy could hear you talking on your radio.
