Expanding the request menu?

Post by Mary.au »

Hey all, not sure if this has been suggested, did a quick search and found nothing.

Ok so I was wondering would it be possible to expand the kit request menu onto a 3rd tier or whatever you would call it?

I though about this when thinking about the removal of the ghille suit, and with many people both for and against having it in the game, I wondered whether it would be possible to have both. And how to go about that I thought, well maybe if you right click on 'sniper' in the request menu, a 3rd set appears, with 'Standard Camo' and 'Ghille Suit'.

So I thought there may be other applications for this or a similar idea, what do you all think?

Also don't bring the ghille suit discussion here, was used as an example only.

Think it would be to much work for just the ghillie suit as you would not need it for the other classes.

I found this sentence quite funny and since this is a war game forum I will put it here. No offense to the french just a good laugh.

I think that's what he meant Zimmer, and that it could be used for other things, as well :p

I'm interested in if it would actually work, though I've got some doubts. If it works, you could use it for other things as well, such as requesting between Irons or magnified Sights on certain kits, or between Helicopter and Jet pilot kits if we wanted to code that. If possible, though, otherwise it would just be another dream killed by BF 2's lack of codableness.

Well, what he's suggesting, is that you get a third tier menu.

The tiers work like this:

  1. Pressing "T" opens up the first tier, allowing you to request a kit, or if you are an SL, drop markers or place buildable assets.
  2. Pressing on the "Request Kit" Button within the first tier opens up a second tier, showing possible kits you can request.
  3. The Proposed "Third tier", if possible, would happen when you click on the wanted kit, L-AT let's say, and would pop another window up, allowing you to select whatever options it had (Irons or Magnified Sights, Ghillie or No ghiillie, etc...)
Now, the only possible problem I see (apart from the entirely likely hardcodedness, which I fear to be the biggest factor), is that we'd need a redesigned menu, because as it is, the second tier is only layered onto the first. Now, if we could simply fade tiers out as they get pushed back, that would also be fine.

I like it, but another menu INSIDE the menu might not be possible.

What about Left-Click and Right-Click?

Snipers: Left-Click = Guile
Right-Click = No Guile

LAT/HAT/Grenadier/Engineer/: Left-Click = Iron Sights/Aim-point
Right-Click = ACOG

That would be a great idea, especially the "customizable weapons" bit. Since you may need to go into CQB as a L-AT, your pretty much screwed with ACOG.

Exactly, I know soldiers from different nations have more or less choice with their customizability, but we could at least allow players the choice of sights. There are times when an Iron sight is better than a zoomed sight, and it should be up to the players to choose.

EDIT: the biggest question still hasn't been solved, as to whether a third tier menu is actually feasible. Any Dev comments on that?

I suggested this system a while back for picking iron sights or scope.

Yes, I remember something similar being suggested before, but I can't remember the answer. It is possible to make more options at the very least, if a Third Tier menu isn't possible.

I support this thread, but i can see a dev or mod coming in just typing hardcoded :(

Well, the only thing that might be hardcoded is the third tier menu. If so, you can always elongate the current menu with all of the options.

One of the first things that will destroy this idea is the fact that for every variation: Ghilly, scope, no scope there needs to be an entire new class in the game. So for all the options for a standard rifleman you would get 3 kits already. And I think the engine has a X number of kits allowed per faction set up. Not that sure though thought I read it somewhere

The idea is awesome and it would be cool if its possible.

EDIT:

just read mojo's topic and heres proof that it is possible engine wise :)

But still, keep it on the actual topic, as its actually a legit idea. Would mean 2x the kits would need to be in the python, but I guess it might be possible. I wouldnt mind it, its a small thing but could be useful given the variation in maps there are.

Left click/Right click is the simplest way of doing this, it's not like we need anymore classes, just people will prefer marginally different loadouts for some of them, although I can imagine demanding equipment as a grunt isn't that realistic...

Adding choices to the kit request menu? Hardcoded? Not at all.

However, i'm not too sure about the possibility to make the game discriminate two different types of pilot kits for different aircrafts.. Might be possible, might be a good thing.

As for the rest, the main idea is great for customization, however what kits or kit-variations would you put? How much would this add to gameplay & realism, Is it worth it?

I think Kit variations for each kit is an interesting opportunity to add variety to the game. But keep in mind this means adding more kits in the PR files for each kit-variation or new kit.
A simple, yet interesting idea would be giving the choice to request Grenadier +irons or Grenadier +scope. Same for the LAT. This might also be applied on the Combat Engineer concept, making a demolition variant and a typical engineering variant. On another hand, what kit geometries will those alternate kits be issued, will they be the same, or different ones?

It's a good idea with available potential, the problem is we need to know what to add, and determine if it's worth the hassle of creating new kits.

Ok well in this or Badmojo's thread we have a lot of positive feedback for the idea, however still no word from the dev's in either tread as to whether the idea is possible or not. It was mentioned that aprox double the kits would have to be implemented into the next build for this idea to come to life, however I doubt that would have any major effect on the download size or performance.

Dev's opinion?

What about if you press T and you got 3 Option to choose, like the Normal rose works.

Looks interesting, But, dont you think its a bit CoD4 like? :P

Although, that would be pretty neat... I want a M249 with ACOG :(

Surely the menu isn't problem here. Look for instance FH2, the menu is completely overhauled. But like said hardest part is the new kits. Anyway it's possible here to think out of the box... circle... whatever you choose.
