First Impressions...

Post by Incognito84 »

You may have saw my other thread, basically I was planning to buy BF2 just for Project Reality.

I'm a huge gamer and a huge consumer of mods, but I had never heard of PR before mainly because I'm into Source engine mods and also because I was majorly turned off by BF2.

Anyway, spent a few hours with it this evening and I was thoroughly blown away! Awesome stuff. It's such a nice change of pace from other mods / games that say they're realistic and end up being anything but. This mod is actually realistic, and manages to be so without being annoying or quirky. It makes sense on every level and has great design balance.

The design and scale of the mod is amazing. I'm new to the community so I don't know how many people are involved nor how long were the involved for, but I must say that it looks like a solid, polished mod. Good stuff.

Yes, it's like my wishes have been granted or something.

Realistic shooters have always lacked in one thing: the people who play them don't play realistically. For realism buffs this mod is a blessing.

I've been playing constantly the past few days and beyond the design aspects of the mod I'm very pleased with the mechanics. Not being used to them, of course, I made a lot of "noob" mistakes like not joining a squad or not joining a good squad, and both of these mistakes impacted my gameplay experience along with my score. This is the only FPS game I can think of where having good team mates makes or breaks the experience. There is no lone wolf factor here--at all, with the exception of being a sniper, and even then it is important to have a teammate nearby.

The thing that caught me off guard the most is how realistically people move about and behave here. I don't understand why other supposedly "realistic" games haven't caught on to this yet. Using real life tactics actually means success and winning has nothing to do with manipulating the gameplay. It's just... great!

Strongly agree. It's simply mind-blowing how people play this game when they get together, plug their mics in, and decide to go Teamplay with a capital 'T'. I agree with you on the 'wishes granted' part - so many things I so badly wanted for years without daring to believe they'd ever be implemented :) .

Unfortunately I rarely get to play PR, and haven't played it regularly since .6, so I have a feeling I'll be slightly lost when I get back on .

Haha, I know what you mean. I was up late playing PR and had trouble waking up for work the next day. It is a very time-consuming game that is probably going to take over all my other games (I'm going to stop playing everything else for awhile).

Anyway, more to the point, when you're in a good squad, even if it's a downtime you're always actively communicating and seeking out what is to be done next. I had a great squad last night and the map we were in was huge (don't know the name = a huge city that takes up the whole NorthWest sector with an airport at the bottom of the SouthWest sector... US vs. Taliban...).

The entire round took two hours and a lot of it involved advancing down a road in a staggered column, using a humvee for cover and taking sporadic gunfire constantly. I don't know about everyone else but for me, being in a situation like that is 10x more tense/exciting than anything CS:S or COD4 can do. When you do get in a gunfight, the tension is already so great that it makes your heart race.

not to be a downer, but let me caution you a little bit. not every round is going to be with good teamwork orientated players. sometimes youl run into some real idiots. sometimes it may seem like the server your on is just full of them. dont be discouraged, this happens to all of us from time to time and its just part of playing with the general public. we are still pretty early into the release of version .85 and with every new release comes a wave of new players, a good portion of which are not willing to play correctly. it does calm down after a while though and many of those people either learn to play or leave. not to mention pr just got mod of the year so its getting alot of advertisement, which is both good and bad for the reasons i just stated. id say for the most part youl have good games with good people, but dont ditch us if you have a few bad rounds ok? ;-)

That is the absolute truth. I hope you've prepared for nothing but PR because soon you wont play anything else.
