[Static Model] Ural 4320 Fuel Tanker [WIP]

Post by space »

Now that Ive picked up my 3ds max skillz again, Im going to make some custom statics for my map.

The first one is going to be a Ural 375D Fuel tanker. I cant actually find any pics of it on the internet, but heres some pics from a modelling site, and also some pics from Arma 2:

It will not be drivable, and Im not going to make it massively detailed, as basically its just a prop for my airfield.

Theres many other vehicles based on this chassis as you can see:

URAL

Therefore, I will make the fuel tank as a separate static from the chassis, so that if I make any other variants, a mapper can add the different parts.

( PS If anyone can find some pics on the internet, please post up the links )

Not sure about the second picture, if its even the right truck. Anyway, i read on a webpage that the 375E is the one that carriers the fuel.

Thanks mojo - the second one is the URAL 4320. Im half considering making that one :D

Theres no blueprints around for either of them with a top view, which doesn't help for modelling, but there's far more reference pictures for the 4320, plus is used as the base chassis for far more vehicles.

Heres another pic of the 4320 variant, and you can see that its quite different from the picture you posted

Image

Even the pictures that I posted in the OP are different. The 4320 is basically an upgraded version of the 375D, so they arent massively different.

Its only a prop static, so Im not going to lose sleep if its not 100% accurate.

You should do both a woodland and desert skin, as it would go nice in some middle eastern maps as well.

Thread title changed - Im going to do the 4320 - There's much better references for it.

My model will just have a woodland skin, but if anyone wants a desert skin they're welcome to make one themselves

Heres an almost finished version - it just needs tweaking, optimising and a couple more details added. As its just a prop statics, its not very detailed, but it only comes to 1800 polys :D ( a large part of the poly count is the seven wheels )

Image

The picture below is my main reason for making the model - I really needed a Russian looking tractor unit for my map. It will be textured in civilian colours, and branded the same as the production plant on my map  ( I might make it into a 4 wheel version - not sure yet )

in regards of the poly count i believe that you should be able to not have the holes in the grill in the front, should be able to be done with a bump map and some good texturing. looks ace when done on the model itself but it takes up a lot of the tri count that could be used better elsewhere.

except from that it looks good so far, considering it only being a rough model so far. i assume that the tank on the back is going to be much more detailed (considering it being the main part of the model you should add a few more edges to even it out a bit more) just my two cents.

motherdear has good some points.
Tri count seems fine though. And I dont see much waste.
I would probably leave the holes in the grill. BF2 dosnt handle displacement maps all that good and these seem pretty deep.

The main problem is the wheels. They need at least 1 more loop going around the side. They have no where near the same softness/curvature the real ones does, they are waay too sharp along the edge :)
Other than that you are doing mighty fine.

Yeah Im leaving the grille as its an important feature which wont come out too well on a texture. Ill add a bit more curve to the bowser part, but in RL it is actually very plain.

I suppose Ill add an extra ridge to the tyres too, but its so damn expensive  The bowser version of the model was just a bit of fun really, to add some variation to my map - its the tractor unit I really need, so I suppose if I make a four wheel version, that will cut down on the polys quite a bit. ( EDIT - just tried it and a 4 wheel version comes out at under 1400 polys )

Image

Overall I wont be adding much more detail - these are just prop statics, so theres no need for them to be massively detailed.

you can optimize the engine cover, and ad more faces to the "tank", the weels can use beter smooth groups, and maybe a chamfer on the sides

Dank - it will be used to carry a trailer like this:

Image

The front of an articulated truck is called a tractor unit, the same as a farmers vehicle is called a tractor ;)

Ive made the truck to replace the big blue American looking truck. In RL, I dont think that theres a 4 wheel version of the truck that I made, but Im not going to lose sleep over it

You can see at the production plant part of my video, that there is lots of trucks :

You have given me an idea though - Almost every map in PR has a farm, and my map has three, and yet there isn't a farmers tractor model. I presume it would be quite simple to model, so I might make one.

ok, got you, but still those Ural tractors are very rare, maybe you'll take a look at Kamaz trucks ;-)

Yeah I realise that a flat fronted truck is more common for civilian use, but the 4320 chassis is the base for many many vehicles, that I may make it the future eg firefighting trucks, radar trucks, command trucks etc etc so thats why I chose it. It means that alot of the textuing and UV mapping will only have to be done once.

I could have made a generic 4 wheel truck not even based on a RL design, but I now have a truck from the 4320 design so I may as well use it. To Western eyes, I think the Ural has a more Russian feel to it, although I realise that in reality the most common civilian trucks in Russia are Western European type designs.

Also the Ural is mainly used by civilians in harsh environments, and my map is based in a fairly mountainous area, so its not too out of place. ;)

Id be happy to use it if you made one - it shouldn't be too hard to make either. Let me know if you do plan to make it, as I've found a few good reference sites for Russian trucks.
