Thoughts on teamwork...

Post by McBumLuv »

Well, Project Reality is at a milestone. It has the most teamwork found in any First Person Shooter game I've played. And yet, even after having made many gameplay changes to enforce teamwork (such as a higher reliance on APCs as transport and dedicated logistic trucks), the game is still grasping at how to get it all to come together.

It's been getting better, of course it has, but it's all still limited by poor communications. How often has it been that you haven't been able to communicate with an APC that was being engaged, and you simply thought they were trying to "be 1337 and rack up points" rather than provide you with transportation?

Personally, I think only one thing can completely secure the wanted teamwork aspect of the game: a global VoiP. Mumble, as it is, is the best candidate to be implemented, regardless of it's flaws brought on by a program not designed purely for PR. At this point, the full implementation of mumble is the only way to acheive any concrete teamwork results, imo.

Any thoughts/opinions on this?

agree, i feel devs have pretty much done all they can and the global/forced use of mumble would top it off

Yeah tbh I agree with that, much as I disagreed with mumble when it first appeared I feel that its enforced use by the entire PR community is the best way to further the already excellent teamwork that we have.

i agree that a standard voip system is needed, but i dont really like mumble.

mumble is cool but i prefer TS over it, i had many problems setting it up, and when i got rid of it my mic is really low apparently. and it only works at certain ranges which is cool, but some times i can only hear a guy who is right next to me. and if i have to talk farther than that i have to say it in global chat where the enemy can hear me i personally prefer Team Speak

BUT if Mumble become mandatory i guess i could adapt to it. i once used mumble to talk to the in game people and TS to talk to my clan mates, which was a little hard getting used to for all the buttons

^ Mumble has screwed over alot of things regarding sound and BF2 on my computer, and I would only like to see it integrated into PR once it is the final perfect version.

Yes, all of these are flaws encountered with mumble. They can be changed, however, which is why Mumble is currently in what you could say a "Beta" test. When auto-joining, preset settings, and automatic channel redirects (joining SL channel when creating a squad) get implemented, thats when mumble can be fully implemented into pr, imo.

I just find there are so many situations where teamwork isn't possible because of a lack of communication.

PR2 with perfect mumble anyone :p ?

It is an open-source program, you just need people to code it.

But yea, currently mumble's relying purely on everyone setting it up properly themselves, so there are problems with it, but if it can be integrated without the 17 step process, it'll be full of win :D

Mumble is indeed opensource, giving the DEVs/mumble DEVs alot of options.

If you are having problems setting up mumble....you might need to start a thread

at least 90% of the people who have gone "hey Rudd, how do I set this up" ask the most dumb questions ever, I just say "that answer was step 3 on the freaking guide, stop wasting my time and read the bloody thread" its like the next "RTFM!!!"

There are videos etc on correct setup

If you are one of the minority who can read and have legitimate problems, the most common problem I've come accross is on Vista and its so easily fixed I could throw myself off a bridge. Mumble might have set BF2 volume to 50% in the audio mixed, go to the audio mixer via sounds in the control panel or the volume icon on ur toolbar and set BF2 to the max volume, and hey presto.

Hopefully a version of mumble with already set settings we can't change will come to us.

Whether or not its good to hear the enemy is still out for discussion. Personally I would like it removed, but I can't see an easy way of having it removed. I wanted it removed because people just get dicklike until they've knifed their 5th guy after going "Look behind youuuu!" and its kinda unrealistic hearing the enemy in your language, but I think of PR as a game of paintball where this happens anyway...so i can get over that.

yea i read that page on installing mumble and it worked except i had to increase one volume setting, forgot which one, i think it was mic output, Those im not so annoyed about Mumble, im annoyed that when i uninstalled it my mic is not sensitive or something.. even Team speak is low, and all my windows setting are now maxed out

If I -had to- run Mumble in order to play PR I would quit playing PR. Mumble may be awesome *shrug* but that doesn't mean I like it being forced on me.

the possibility of "forcing" mumble along side of PR would mean that you have to do NOTHING what so ever...

IIRC , it can be done so it will automatically do everything for you. and why would you not like to talk to every person on server by just walking up to them?

What Gazz said. What we want is for Mumble to be preset, just like ingame VoiP (not in features, but in the fact that it sets everything up for you). Mumble adds soooo much to gameplay. SL-to-SL voip and inter-squad communication, for instance. Both of which bridge the last gaps in acheiving the highest levels of teamwork.

If you've ever played a game with an entire team on Mumble, you'll see what I mean. Transportation is always easily acquired, same with supplies, covering fire, etc...

afaik it is possible to run a script that connects you to the appropriate mumble server automatically without you having to do anything.

Really I'd E-mail EA about how they forced a shitty VOIP system where you can only talk to around 5 ppl at a time....

I don't think Voip is the problem at all, you can get in contact with anyone in the game as is. The way in which the comms are currently setup now is more realistic than a simple global voip. At the most I would say provide direct comms with all transport units and that would maintain realism and solve the issue that you're reffering to.

Plus, do we really want 32 people trying to give orders and talk over the same VOIP? That's just going to be chaos. Even if it's setup properly I still don't feel it would achieve your goal of more teamwork.

There's other ways to improve teamwork. #1 being no more respawns. Best believe people will work together if they know they only had one shot, strength in numbers. But, that train of thought gets pushed to the side when you know you can go off on your own and simply respawn when you die.

I think forcing mumble on PR is a good idea, and i support it.

It is more realistic..

Also i would like to hear what the enemy says, i mean if i can order my squad to be quiet, and we would all be behind a wall listening in on an enemy position we could easily hear any "intelligence" worth telling the rest of the team. Or we could scare them, or use psychology to kill people ( Not mind power, but traps etc.) which woul give a completly new level of gameplay, so yeah! GO MUMBLE!

All those suggestion threads or people upset with squads not communicating with one another or having to type where you want to go to a pilot can go once everyone uses Mumble.

The few people I know that don't like Mumble is because'f the enemy being in the same channel. I do kinda like it and it can be fun to hear/ joke around with the enemy (especially during knife fights) but it causes a lot of foolery between teams too.

If people follow the installation instructions perfectly, Vista users install it in administrator mode and each team gets it's own channel, there should be no reason for anyone to not like it.

No mumble please. Or seperate channels for teams.

I mean what's the point of sneaking when everything you say can be heard.

What i would want: Autoconnecting program(mumble/ts/don't care which that sorts peapole into squads automaticly.

So you have the program on, join a server, join a squad and hey presto you have communication. Then you just have a global button for your side when you need to tell peapole something and teamwork ensues. (hopefully)

hay the VOIP right now really sucks. but it would be really nice to have an SL coms over command coms.
but for now what me and my friends do we use Xfire wan were all SL and we run an INF and APC or ground spoting recon team with CAS "works really good!! but ya it works pritty well for us.

but to have an SL coms would be really nice and just do away with the command coms and the commander too
