Sniper Scope Crosshairs
Hello, just thought i'd make a suggestion for the mod about the sniper scopes.
Since this is a reality mod, i thought i'd bring in some reference from real life snipers to back up my suggestion.
Basically, the problem i've had with snipers in BF2 since day one, is their terrible crosshairs (see BF2 M24 scope/ BF2 SVD Scope at the bottom). At 100m, the crosshairs simple blocks the view of the enemies head, making it a hit or miss/basically a lucky shot, since you have to guess the distance and bullet drop as well.
So my suggestion is simple that you reduce the crosshairs size on the scopes to a much thinner design. If you look through a sniper (ref. SVD Scope PSO-1 or Through 2 uknown sniper scopes, Through what looks like the M24 scope), you will see that the middle, is extremely thin, but able to see. This allows the sniper to accurately aim at an enemies head.
I've included a reference to the accuracy of the M24 (using the M3A scope), which shows that at a range of 500, you can hit a target within 3 square inchs or less. If you look at a screen shot from BF2, you will notice that at 100m, the crosshairs simple covers more than 3", disallowing for proper aiming.
Similar arguement goes for the SVD (ref. SVD scope PSO-1, near the bottom of the page) showing that the scope crosshairs for this rifle is thinner than seen in BF2 (ref. SVD Scope), and needs to be made thinner for a more realistic aim, rather than a game of "guess where the head is in my scope".
Love the mod, just hope you can make this tiny little suggestion of mine come true since it's something i've wanted from BF2 for a long time. Something similar to another mod's crosshairs (ref. Other Mod's Scope - OPK mod) would be fantastic.
Sorry to drone on, and i hope i got the right word (crosshairs) or i'm going to sound like a complete *** about now, but being my clan's sniper in BF2, it would be great to see it.

When you're looking down your scope with one eye shut, that's all you see. Having two eyes open would blur things.
Yes, having crosshairs smaller would be nice, but you have to bear in mind technical limitations. For crosshairs to work on all resolutions, they have to be a certain size at 800x600 which will then appear bigger on higher resolutions. Yes, on a higher resolution it'd be possible to make it smaller, but reverting to low resolutions would make the crosshair disappear, thus making it unfair on those who can't afford to play at high res. I imagine the crosshairs could get a little smaller, but the thinnest part of the M24 scope is as thin as is able on low resolution settings.

I did consider this, but if you look at the Chinese sniper scope (can't remember the name of it for the life of me), it's at least half the width. Even this would be fine to use.Malik wrote: Yes, having crosshairs smaller would be nice, but you have to bear in mind technical limitations. Which one is the SPR?'[R-DEV wrote:Rhino']what did you think about our SPR scope Mibeshu?
also the OPK scope was fully textured correctly, it looks like the beat version of out SPR scope![]()
....and what do you mean by fully textured?

I would love to see crosshair sway as well. This could be decreased depending on the position (standing, crouching, prone) and completely replace the uber unrealistic random shot deviation on the sniper rifles. Deploying a bipod could completely eliminate all scope sway, but greatly decrease mobility and angle of fire.
I would like to see some sway on all weapons at least partially replacing the random shot deviation. Of course an l85 will have less random deviation than a 9mm weapon, but the deviation for all weapons should be set in stone. The deviation would not increase/decrease with different firing positions, but the sway would. Sway should also be a major factor when first taking aim.
Currently, one can immediatly look down the sights and have insta-steady aim. The weapon sway should not only vary depending on firing position, but the amount of time a weapon is given to "settle". Quickly moving one's ironsights around the screen should also cause one's aim to unsettle for a moment. Anyone who has fired a real weapon should know what I'm talking about.
Although it would be more difficult to land accurate shots on enemies standing, It can still be done if one is a skilled marksman and they let the weapon settle.

the SPR, or Mk12 SPR is the new sniper in PR for the USMC side on some maps.Mibeshu wrote:Which one is the SPR?

heres a pic of the scope as it in in v0.3

and a pic of the beat version of the scope, notic the inside of the scope is all wired. you can see a little bit of this on the OPK scope but not as much.

I have anothe suggestion:
it would be great to rearange the lines in the crosshair to the distance to the target. you know, cross in the middle <50m, 1st line under the cross 100m, 2nd line <150m, and so on, so that you know, how high you got to aim above your target. somewhat like in operation flashpoint.

Ah yes, it's a good sniper, but i still believe, at longer ranges that the crosshair is still a little too thick. Maybe it's my own fault, but i tend to like sniping distances, rather than close up'[R-DEV wrote:Rhino']the SPR, or Mk12 SPR is the new sniper in PR for the USMC side on some maps.

As for the sway, it would be nice to see where the deviation will land my bullet rather than relying on luck or the 3 second rule (which barely works anyway). Not sure how possible it would be, but it would be nice to cut down on the random bullet deviation.

I personally like the beta version of the SPR scope more than just having one giant texture englufing my entire screen. It kinda adds to the realism factor for me. And is there anyway to back the view up from the scope so that you can see the world around you AND the magnification on the scope. Kind of like in this pic which was posted by Mibeshu?
