New to PR, a few questions...
Hey!
Introductions first. Im what you would call a casual gamer, i play now and then, when have time, seeing as i have a family. Have played fps games for about 15 years on and off, lately BF2. I am just getting into playing in squads in BF2, and want to try <pr to get more into squad playing. Hopefully i will shoot some of you in game some day, but probably some of you will hit me a lot more. Before i start playong on anything but training servers, id love to get some hints and some ideas, so here goes...
Voip/ts/xfire:
At the moment i dont have a mc, other than the one uilt into my laptop. Is it possible to -use that for ingame voice chat? and if so how, and what chat program should i use?
Reading the forums i see most people prefer squadmembers to be able to talk, not type, when issuing messages.
Tips on how to become a good squad member are needed.
All other hints on gameplay/squads will be appreciated.
Hopeflly someone will atleast read my thread, and i will see some of you online.
Thanks
Ondbob

Re: New to PR, a few questions...
Hi Ondbob, and may I be the first to welcome you to the community!
I wrote a little short 'pointer' post a while back here: https://www.realitymod.com/forum/f257-v ... -life.html
Also - I tried a search of "tips on squad life" (to find my old thread) and there are quite a few tips out there.
Just remember, when you are SL, you are expected to have a plan and lead the implementation of the plan. Use your marker arrows to help give orders (PR has done some nice icon work on these).
And read teh manual!
Good luck!

First of all welcome to PR
As for your questions, ingame voip is used extensively. Alot of people also use a program called mumble which you can see in action here
I'm not sure about laptop mics but yes alot of squad leaders would prefer if you would use a mic not type.
You can also find an extensive guide by clicking the "Guide" button just underneath the banner on the same row as "Forums"
You can also find Tactics and Strategies @ PR In-Game Tactics and Strategies - Project Reality Forums

If you do go for using your laptop mic, make sure you use headphones instead of the built in speakers, or you'll annoy your squadmates to the degree of them kicking you within secods.

Its a fairly intense amount to learn but the gameplay, for those who enjoy teamwork, is hard to beat in the video gaming world.. infact i would go as far as saying there arent any other games that are as team oriented and socially interactive as PR...
and that not just cause im on the development team..
Most of these guys are fairly friendly.. you can even Personal message them and they will get back to you..
Good luck...happy hunting..

Wow! This forums looks like its really alive! Makes me happy!
If i intend to use my onboard mic, what program should i use? Dont really want to annoy people, so yes, i do have a good headset(which, luckily, makes my wife not dislike gunsounds too much either).
I will look into other posts to check up on team life, movement and stuff. Hopefully i will get a few hours in on a training server tonight! Expecting to be shot at and killed, but still i will be having fun!

Most people just use in-game VoIP for casual public gameplay, although some servers host separate Teamspeak servers. PR and the community have also been taking a liking to Mumble, which is a great programme.ondbob wrote:If i intend to use my onboard mic, what program should i use? The default buttons to use voip within your squad is B and V for the commander if you are squadleader. There is also BF2voicesetup in BF2/ folder so you can adjust your voicelevels there. Hope it helped and welcome to the forums and PR

Wehey another Norwegian Joins the Forum! Welcome!
Make sure you look on how the Norwegian Faction is coming along(Thats right, you get to pwn with norwegian accent and weapons)
Its not out yet tho.. But when it does, its gonna be beutifull!
Anyway, to be a good squadmember, just remember the utmost basic, see a need and fill a need.
If you see the squad needs a medic, be a medic. If you see enemies, report them, if enemies are shooting at you, shoot back.
Just be the guy who does all the shit work that noone else wants to do, not only will you improve the way people think of you, but you improve how they think of the game, and you make playing for the SL alot easier.
Just a thought
Were all newbs here mate
Anywho, there is a large norwegian presence on this forum, so.. Yeah PM me for more info, on your native tounge ofc.

YouTube - PR v0.75 Sunset City Gameplay (1 of 2)

Watching those helps you see how it works alot. Read the Infantry and Squad Leading strategy sections since they have tons of info too.

I use my onboard mic and it works good. Still want to get a better headset some day. With adjustable volume slider as one thing it needs!

Re: New to PR, a few questions...
thanks to all those who have aswered!
I am looking into the videos referred to, also i am reading the manual.
Will get to the training servers as soon as i can, so dont be scared if i contact any of those that have offered in game help.
Wicca, ill pm you.
As for doing the grunt work that nobody wants to do, in order to be "respected", that is how i view life and work situations ingeneral: you dont DEMAND respect, respect is something you earn through your actions. So i will try my best to do that in game too.
Thanks again guys

Re: New to PR, a few questions...
In regards to the headset/mic thing, a USB headset from logitech can cost as little as $22 over this way [Australia] so I'd assume they could be had for what... like 10 Euros? Isn't that like the price of a cup of coffee over there
? USB headsets just make it easier because of the onboard soundcard they carry and no need for drivers.
To get ingame voip working, you need to enter the Options in PR => Audio & make sure the "Voice Over IP" is enabled (checked) and that transmit/receive is at 100%. Mic threshold is personal preference although I use ~20%.
Also, make sure in your Windows' sound settings that the correct input is being used (integrated microphone) rather than some of the weird ones that Windows arbitrarily picks occasionally.
