Thoughts on 2 man locked squads for armor?
I did something today that ive been meaning to do for a while. I was on a server playing kashan {cant remember which one} and i created a squad called "armor" i then proceeded to hop in the driver seat of a t-72 and wait for someone to join so i could have a gunner. after a few minutes, another person joined my squad. i immediately locked the squad with the 2 of us in it. why did i lock it? because ive made armor squads before and filled them up with guys in other tanks and the amount of radio chatter is ridiculous. just between you and your gunner, when your in a tank there is alot of coms going on. add 2 more fully crewed tanks to a squad, and now the airwaves are literally jammed with "STOP STOP!! HES RIGHT THERE 75 DEGREES SHOOT HIM!! BACK UP BACK UP ETC ETC" from the other tanks. with my locked squad, it was just me and my gunner. i was able to concentrate better on team chat, asking the team where enemy armor was, and me and my gunner were worked like clockwork it was a very good experience in armor for me. and we kicked ***, taking out 3 abrams 2 hummers and a few trucks in only about a 30 min time frame.
so heres my dilemma, my team got kind of annoyed that i locked the squad. other guys wanted to be in tanks, and kept tellin me to unlock the squad. i replied that they should make a new squad since i like it the way i had it it was much easier to communicate with my gunner. im under the impression that the other players on my team felt as though naming my squad "armor" meant that all armor players should be in my squad, like the way a "chopper" squad works. and normally they are right, but i did want to try something differnt and i liked the results. so i guess what im asking is, is what i did bad etiquette? the rest of my team didnt seem to understand my logic, although they did eventually ask me if i they could make another armor squad, which was ironic considering i suggested they do that a few minutes earlier.
so should i not do this again?

As far I am concerned it's the same as cobra idiots making a two man squad and locking it. I never see people whining about that. If the admins are cool with it then do it if it works.
Ah, I long for the day when armor bunnies have a map that's all armor against armor...

mumble
use it so only the tank crew of each individual tank can hear eachother
use bf2 VOIP when inter tank coms required
2 man locked tanks are generally bad imo, as tanks must stick together if they are to defeat multiple tank groups.

Why are some people still going Mumble-free? Get it, it rules for every and all situations.

Far too lazy to be honest
But as far as tanks go 2 man locked squads have their cons. Tanks have to stick together, or will risk losing tank battles. When the whole team splits the tanks up, generally what happens is that they don't have back up, and get destroyed by a coordinated group of tanks. There is a good side for a full tanking squad, you have 6 set of eyes and ears, if one tank gets engaged the other can flank and ambush. So anyone in a 6 man tanks squad I recommend the following personally:
1. Use mumble or any program like vent.
2. Spread your tanks out just a bit.
3. Put markers on all your contacts!!! So the other tanks can flank.
4. Learn the name of your gunner/driver, say his name when your talking to him.
5. Keep chatter to the most important stuff.
2 man locked squads are ok for armor, if you have someone coordinating all the tanks (commander or people on vent). But you don't see that on pubs...
One more important thing, your experiment was with a tank. But with an apc you probably need a full squad, since your TOW reload and shots are slow. So you can have one apc engage retreat, and another to engage and finish the target off.

Various community members (e.g. me) have been given admin powers, don't worry, DJs/tards will get muted/kicked very quickly.
i.e. its no worse than a public teamspeak.

Re: Thoughts on 2 man locked squads for armor?
Personally I think a 2 man locked armor squad is a bad idea. Tanks, as said by someone else, are supposed to stick together, not wander off. Tanks are extremely easy to take down when alone. Just use mumble if you don't want to hear their ****, and use regular VOIP if you want to give all the tanks general orders.

2 Man tanks lockd squad is good.. if the Map is light on APC's Or Tanks, Fallujah is awesome for this.. i mean, theres a little number of APC's.. and you only need 2 guys for them.

Re: Thoughts on 2 man locked squads for armor?
IMO, it really depends on how your going to be using your tank(s).
If your planning on just going off on your own and trying to hit tanks as you please, then its best to have a 2man squad BUT doing is is no where near as effective, espically if you come up against a enemy squad of tanks that are working together. One of the biggest problems about 2 man squads, if you have loads of them, you can easily reach the max squad limit and as such, have many ppl without squads... this can be REALLY bad for the team and in this case, you need to just open up your squad and let the other tankers in.
If you plan on working with 2 or so other tanks / APCs, then its best to all be in the same squad, then yes, if your only using VOIP there can be a lot of chatter, BUT if your sticking together, that chatter is reliant for the most part, thou if you go off in different direction, 2 man squads are better. As many ppl have said, the use of Mumble can really help just let you talk to your gunner when need be, then shout out to the rest of the squad if you spot a tank, then go on mumble to talk with your gunner about what you are going to do exactly etc and then let the rest of the squad in on VOIP about the other details if you have split off to flank or w/e. You can also edit your mumble settings so its only like 5m you hear from on mumble so you can only talk to the ppl in your vehicle or just outside with mumble.
So yes, if you want to be as effective as possible, make tanking squads and use VOIP and mumble

To be honest, if your travelling in an armour pack, comms shouldn't be that confusing as you should never be too far away from people anyway, so it doesn't really make a difference. However as has been said, Mumble is the biggest asset in these situations

Re: Thoughts on 2 man locked squads for armor?
I agree. Three tanks in one squad is too many chefs creating one soup. So you can keep locking it unless the team gets to the squad limit and people cant create squads. Write OneTank on your squadname to clarify your intentions with the squad.charliegrs wrote:I did something today that ive been meaning to do for a while. Re: Thoughts on 2 man locked squads for armor?
dont forget you can mute your squadmembers
so you can talk with your gunner and communicate with other tanks in squad via squad chat, or mute only tank gunners and leave communication with their drivers
