Mumble, whats the point?

Post by coxy52k »

Hi guys,

I used to play PR prior to 8.5 being realeased but when it was released I tried to update and it failed. I then left to work in America and never really got back to sorting it out.

However I have just re-installed, and everything seems to be working fine (except for a few lag spikes every so often but I can live with that!)

Then looking over the forums I came accross Mumble. I am not sure exactly what it is and what benifit it has from the games VOIP system. Is it worth installing? What differences are there? and do enough people use it?

Thanks in advance

mumble is an alternative to teamspeak

it has higher quality sound, and lower latency

many servers have channels in a centralised PR official server, making it easy to pub with

it also has positional audio, meaning you wil hear sound from the direction of speakers within 100m, or so.

i.e. that blue guy next to you can talk to you now without 32 other people hearing him on teamspeak.

So "medic, patch me up and I'll cover you"

or "joe bloggs, throw a grenade at that bunker!"

or "APC driver, take my squad to bravo 2 plz"

(or the reverse, "infantry, provide rear security, enemy AT ahead" <- really happened)

or talk to your pilot.

Plug and play baby!

see my sig for details.

but plz plz plz plz plz follow each step of installation (it only takes 5 mins to setup) 90% of people who ask me for help find out that they just missed a step. (apart from vista users, set background application volume to 100% or so if ur experiencing a quiet game volume)

+you can talk to people outside your squad (inter-squad communications makes for superb teamwork 8-) )
+you can talk to your gunner/driver without disturbing the others

-the enemy can hear you if youre in the same channel
-some people are annoyed by people talking outside the game (all can hear it if you arent spawned in-game)

Thanks for the quick replies!

Sounds amazing and will be even better if EVERYONE used it! I shall install it now!

Do you use it as well as VOIP or can I turn that off to save on lag?

keep ur voip on, due to the organisation of the game (rally points etc) BF2 voip still has a valid use.

especially in armour formations as the inter vehicle radio.

mumble is a addition to voip, voip is still the main communication channel intill more people discover the epicness of mumble

VOIP still the best intra-squad comms generally, gunner/driver in tanks etc aside, but mumble allows for inter-squad comms, both between individuals and between SLs which =awesome.

The more people that use it the better and more useful it becomes.

oh, and

-People creating squads named "mumble", gathering all the mumblers in one squad which they dont realize is useless when theres no-one outside the squad to communicate with

With any luck the sound team will be able to develop mumble to be much more expansive in it's uses and effects with any luck too, so hopefully disabling VoIP altogether will be feasible at some point.

It's still good cos you have an idea of where people in your squad are around you without having to bring up your map every 2 seconds ;)

I use mumble for talking to those around me and i use bf2 voip as a radio since the sound quality and latency make sense as it to be a radio. I hope that if they integrate mumble into pr they keep bf2 voip a separate button to use as a radio if your squad mates are too far.

The potential for accidentally calling someone on Mumble a mong while thinking I'm talking to my clan on TS or in squadchat is just too great.
