-Audio Protection for Players-
In light of another post in the technical support section, I was inspired to suggest this on behalf of the PR Community.
In PR, we utilise a large variety of firearms, vehicles and other objects, most of which have an associated sound. However, while some sounds may be rather quiet, calling for us to increase our volume (for instance, the sound of an RP), other sounds are much, much louder, even while effects settings are relatively low.
Firearms, imo, are not much of an issue. Explosives can, however, be much louder and irritating at times.
Yet the focus of this thread is more so related to vehicles, as their engines can cause a player to send their headset flying across the room in shock or anguish. perhaps Both.
Some vehicles are so loud, that it impairs the ability to hear squad mates / commanders over VoIP, and greatly impairing communication between individuals.
Im sure most players will agree, that by far the most infamous culprits for such audio-offence are none other than Support/Engineer Trucks.
Riding in one of these vehicles is a rather hellish experience, as one simply has to ride out the storm of sound and watch helplessly as VoIP symbols blink, pointlessly.
As you will notice IRL, sitting in a moving car is generally much quieter than standing beside it, yet in this case it is quite the opposite.
Another, perhaps more hidden audio-danger, is the less well-implemented aircraft. For example, the Tornado jet has no/very little noise reduction and therefore makes operating it as a pair immensely hard.
I propose that for this vehicle, driver/passenger sound reductions are better implemented to protect Players ears from such harsh levels, in the up and coming releases.

Agree I always find myself cranking the volume to hear a certain sound at the volume I believe it SHOULD be but then blow my ears off when another sound comes into the equation
Its not terrible as it is now, but I know there are times that it happens...

Re: -Audio Protection for Players-
I have my effects volume low and voip volume at 100% to help combat this, and volume hotkeys for both TS and mumble.
But still, it unbalances the rest of the game sounds in comparison to vehicles.

I'll add some light sound occlusion to the trucks for the next version. Trucks are reasonably loud IRL but those inside the cab or in the back shouldn't hear it as loud as they do currently.

haha same here. I finally have it set up so that I can adjust to the loudest sound and hear the rest but sometimes its hard to hear some VOIP's or RP's.[R-DEV]OkitaMakoto wrote:Agree I always find myself cranking the volume to hear a certain sound at the volume I believe it SHOULD be but then blow my ears off when another sound comes into the equation

What about increasing the sound of when inside a helicopter? Thats realistic, i mean people wear headphones to communicate inside a Heli?
Anythought?
I agree with the truck though, kinda funny going:
Man1: "There is enemies up ahead, right side"
Man2: "WHAT?!, did you say something?!"
Man1: "Enemies!"
Man2: "what?, Whoa there are enemies here!"
Ive been there... Done that

IM pretty sure their helmets are insulated and dampen sound, so the only thing their hear are their voices, the heli blades and the missile streaking towards them...Wicca wrote:What about increasing the sound of when inside a helicopter? Great suggestion and I agree totally. Another one of these dangerous situations is when you use the camera button to look behind you when in a jet. My ears almost fell of once..

I do tend to find my self unable to hear squad members talking over voip, when in a vehichle or more often standing next to one with the engine switched on.

Re: -Audio Protection for Players-
IRL audio protection for troops is a real problem, lots of our troops are coming home from operations in iraq and 'stan with hearing problems like tinnitus etc.
To combat this they are developing kit for troops which effectively help block harmful noises such as explosions. Each soldier will be issued with in-ear defenders with have been moulded from a cast of that soldiers ear canals, totally blocking the canal.
But built in each moulding will be a small speaker like an in-ear headphone which, from a small unit carried on their combat rig, transmits an audio signal from a microphone and from their personnel patrol radio so that they can talk, hear their surroundings and use radio comms.
the unit will supposedly block the higher and lower frequencies and physical force that damage the ears.
Not much use for us here in the game but i thought i would just mention it

Sounds good, welcome to the forums
Hey, can you give me a link on that headphone thingy?
I would love to read about it..

Agreed, I had a SL the other day get pissy with me because I constantly jumped out of the truck or didn't do what he wanted me to because I couldn't hear shit while driving it.

Re: -Audio Protection for Players-
Are they really that loud as to almost be on the same level as a SLAM or AA gun though? Obviously large explosions are shorter sounds so it has a much less noticeable effect on VoIP but they still seem pretty bloody loud in comparison to everything else. I know you have to narrow the dynamic range a fair amount for very obvious reasons, but they still seem a little to loud too me, I've never fired or seen a real rifle been fired in real life but is that kinda volume really on a par (if not quieter with some rifles like the QBZ family it seems) with a loud truck engine?[R-DEV]Jaymz wrote:I'll add some light sound occlusion to the trucks for the next version. Not having a go or anything, just the contrast seems a little out of proportion to me, but like I said I don't know what the relative volume of other firearms and cannons and such should be compared to trucks to be honest.
