Snipers sneak into enemy territory unseen, crawl around for days to get to a position. Once there they wait and wait, and wait and do recon or eliminate a target.

Then they go home again.


The whole point of the sniper is that the enemy doesn't know you're there. In PR, the enemy ALWAYS knows you're there, because it's a game.
Theres no place for snipers in PR, not when the maps are max 4km big and everything a sniper does could be done by a regular infantryman without the massive ticket loss for dying.

I think snipers should be removed and replaced with a more realistic kit, like an M240 or another M16/M4 with an eotech or something.

I love the snipe but the difference for me is I don't do all the stupid things that seem almost required of "less than par" snipers. I usually only snipe on maps I feel really comfortable on try to keep a spotter with me for protection and an extra pair of eyes. As a sniper it's hard to be completely team orientated but I do everything I can. By that I lase, report everything I see (the latter being if we have a commander), and tell any squads heading to or nearby enemies their position and heading.

I am a firm believer that the sniper kit isn't a offensive kit. In fact I hardly ever fire my rifle. I only shoot when I know I have a good target that is potentially detrimental to my teams progress on AAS. On Muttrah City I may see a squad of MEC sitting up on a roof or inside one of the many apartments and I always call them out. If I know they are busy with my team mates then I may peg a few here and there but that's it.

I think just like anything the sniper CAN do a lot of good but most of the time it doesn't do a lot of good.

I am not a big fan of the kit, but it doesn't bother me. If someone wants to go sniper, thats their choice. Just not in my squad.

Well, I don't hate snipers at all. Only the ones that fail. TBH, they don't bother me however they want to perform. Because if they perform to the best of their ability in a manpower/efficency ratio, they'd go lonewolf and just walk to where ever they wanted, since there's not enough of an advantage to bring along a spotter anymore.

If they wanted to survive as long as possible and do the very best they could, they'd take a few more people off the field and everyone on the team would look at the 3/4 man squad not helping the team directly, and would complain.

It's a kind of "damned if you do, damned if you don't" situation for snipers.

Anyways, I'm only annoyed by the ones who are in my squad and get the kit, because that's an extra man out of the squad that could be used otherwise. and it provides a very akward moment when I ask them politely to leave and they don't. Not to be generalized with all snipers, but there are a few asshats everywhere. It's just that people remember the bad players more than the good most of the time.

One of the DEVs is a sniper. And he said that most of the times they were support for regular troops.

you wont have the awkward moment if you dont give him a choice.

it's normally a race to see if i can kick the sniper from my squad before he leaves on his own (for the principle of it). like a bunch of people have said in this thread...i dont hate snipers, i hate snipers in MY squad.

pffft. In game people go off as snipers and do their own thing. Sounds like real life to me. Even RSMs give up on us.

It's a different world now I suppose.

My general point is still valid though. There is nothing a sniper can bring to a squad that any other kit can't bring, with extra stuff.

Engagements over 800m are rare at best and only really occur on Kashan and possibly Quinling if any servers ever played that map anymore.
For all intent and purpose the standard rifleman with optics and/or designated marksman can fill the shoes of the sniper for support purposes perfectly and still manage to keep it tight in CQC and put down accurate suppressive fire quickly.

Snipers are awesome and all that but they're not keeping up with the rest of the team as it is now.
Maybe if people couldn't talk when they're dead, or if they could so sabotage on like radio towers to cut the other team off from their commander or stuff like that, they would be more appreciated.

I like snipers.
On kashan, with CAS and a CO.
It is a shame that nobody else can ever carry that laser designator though.
I might feel differently then.

squad leaders have the SOFLAM as well.

I only hate the snipers that don't operate quietly. The most of the sniper are more like a rambo, they drive with a humvee to the front line, they sprint to their position and start nade spamming. The best way is penetrate the front lines with stealth. Get behind their lines in a good covering position, not on the highest point (it's the first place were they look). And report troop concentrations to the commander. Don't shoot without permission. And if you want to kill do not shoot regular troops, but people that man stingers etc. It are just some basic points. And if you only wan't to scout you can also do it with a normal rifleman kit

when im on long desert maps etc i try to join a squad with 6 people, and ill relay information to them of whats ahead etc and things they cant necessarily see and all that. im also quite good at it.

The main thing I have to ask here is, did you ask your squadleader and then follow his intructions on providing overwatch? If he is a SL thats wants someone to do that with a sniper kit thats fine. If someone joined my squad grabbed a sniper then said "I can provide overwatch for you", I would give them two choices:1)I request them some type of infantry kit or even a crewman or anything with a normal rifle and no super special role, or 2) I kick them out of the squad after lecturing them on why what they did is wrong.

Well I personally like snipers (killing them that is), and their great for surpressing hardpoints provided you relocate every shot.
I love the feeling of an insurgent that just got a good kit, it's like a kid gettin a toy on Chirstmas (except its the muslim version)

And you don't nesscarily have to pick off only the important targets, when an enemy squad is being engaged a flanking sniper/marksmen can do alot of damage.

The problem is that they don't relocate to flank enemies or hide

They want a ride into the frontlines so that they can die with their long-range rifles

They join your squad just to get the kit

They have no teamwork

They take a humvee/log/whatever and dump it by the frontline so they can be lost. (more often when playing as insurgent alot of snipers/squads would only walk on foot after their vechical has been fired upon, clearly lacking patience/brains)

They d/c right after they die (most vaniella guys do this, fortunally they usually don't come back)

Or that they fire before the rest of the squad engages the enemy and they die since the enemy would know where they are.

So really like the rest of PR its good, but if only of there were real teamplayers.

Remember, potential snipers:

The rifle is an attachment to that scope.

So I have a question for all you squadleaders out there.

When someone joins your squad and requests to grab the rifle, does that drop down your respect for them right then and there? Is the kit beyond redemption in all your collective eyes?

Squadleaders often have other duties and losing your SL to get a lase down can truly suck.

people are free to grab what ever kit they want. i just have no use of a sniper in any squad that i run. so i will ask them to leave once. if they don't the get the boot. i would rather have an extra set of boots on the assualt then some on on top of the crane that says... "look at all the kills i got!? what do mean i am not helping!?"

i kick them instantly. i would LOVE a squad sniper that would stick by my side and when i see a target 600m away can shoot him, but its all the same....

"let me go over here"
"let me get on that hill, ill cover you"
"let me blah blah blah"

next thing i know i see a enemy i want killed at range and i check map and my sniper is half way across the map. the kit is a virus , it infects the best of people. so i just insta kick to avoid the above.

Experience taught me that it's usually the vanilla/ CS: S players who want a sniper rifle. To me, a sniper would be plain useless in a regular riflemen squad. They want to go ninja everywhere, and they usually fail or can't keep up with me. And when they ask:"but why nut?" I reply:"Cause a M16 kills too.". Imho it'd do a lot of good if it would be removed, or restrict it to 1 kit per map, so that most of the people aren't annoyed by them. And those kind of players go absolutely nuts on maps like Muttrah, where they hop in the first LB they see, and want to be dropped on the most impossible spots on the map.
