These depates can sometimes be real gatherings of boneheads, but there's point on both sides here. I agree with Robert that those choppers aren't close to realism at the moment, and with Rhino about that if you want them to be as real as possible you just have to do it yourself.

You can't just copy and paste coding from another game.GLQ wrote:What about Joint Operations heli physics ???
Let alone that they don't even run on the same engine, but there could also be legal issues about that.

Re: Helicopters are too unrealistic
Like I've said before, I've got tons of pictures and videos but it still could be anyone's face on that picture, no? That's why I typed in my name in that computer along with the GPS time and date to prove it's recent. Thought that'd be better evidence than just a picture of me in a Chinook.[R-DEV]Rhino wrote:then surly you can code it, no?
I will keep on saying it, if you want it changed, do it yourself. If not, you have already put your advice here multiple times and if we have time to give a huge overhaul to all the chopper physics we may consider looking at them but we would rather take advice from some one who is going to be more constructive than "its total ****!"
I will see if Kill Pirate dose agree with you but I have not heard him say the chopper physics are soo bad in PR they need to be shoved onto the highest priority issue and I know for sure hes a pilot since I've seen many pictures he has presented to us of both him and his chopper, many good refs on how to improve the realism of the blackhawk for the US Army which we did for v0.8, where you have only given us a little computer shot with Robert typed into it....
Anyone seen that youtube link yet I posted? Lots of cockpit shots from the Huey. You can see how 'fast' a real helicopter moves.
Anyway, I know what I'm talking about and I'm saying the way helicopters handle in BF2 is WAY WAY BETTER than in PR. PR is just... like you're flying some kind of hovercraft or something. I don't know, it defies logic.
So why do you keep on saying I have to code myself? I say revert to BF2 coding. It's 20x better than the way it is now. All you could do is speed up the choppers a LITTLE bit. Other than that, they're probably about as realistic as it gets with this engine.

The speed doesnt seem to be much lower than the speed of a Huey or Littlebird ingame.Robert1983nl wrote:And I already told you guys, if you want to see how fast the ground moves underneath a helicopter: JUST CHECK OUT YOUTUBE.
Since you people obviously didn't, here's one of my videos:

You'll notice it's not NEARLY as fast as helicopters move in PR.
What choppers have you used in PR? There are a few that are much worse than others.
PS: What are the songs in that vid?

Well to me it seems a LOT faster in PR. Especially choppers like the little bird. But anyway, speed is one of the minor issues with chopper handling in PR. I've flown 'm all in PR. The only one that's pretty ok is the Merlin. The Blackhawk, Huey and Littlebird have the weirdest handling.Waaah_Wah wrote:The speed doesnt seem to be much lower than the speed of a Huey or Littlebird ingame.

Oh btw, A lot of parts in that video are sped up big time! You can tell by the change of pitch of engine sound and ofcourse the unnatural movements. I forgot I did that... Bad example...
The names of the songs in the vid in chronological order:
Creed - Higher
Rolling Stones - Paint it Black
Booker T and the MG's - Green onion
Creedence Clearwater Revival - Fortunate Son
The Kinks - All day and all of the night

Re: Helicopters are too unrealistic
Well for me it doesnt matter much. I haven't flown in PR since 0.4. And even if i had, it wouldnt matter much if the handling were realistic much.
What matters to me is if the helicopters behaviour is realistic. With the BF2 handling it seems the helicopter has much much to much acrobatic ability, wich it doesnt have so much in PR.
Much.

Anyway, i think the reason you think BF2 speeds are more realistic is the fact that most BF2 maps are tiny and have a tiny view distance. Put that VBF2 BH on kashan, and you will notice how stupidly slow it goes. Put a PR chopper there, and wait a minute, look similar to this? :

Try this, and see what you think. It does still accelerate too fast, but I think over all I like it alot better.
Make a back up of your objects_server.zip from "program files/EA GAMES/Battlefield 2/mods/pr/objects"
Then drag this file into "vehicles/air/us_ahe_apache" in the objects_server.zip.
2shared - download us_ahe_apache.tweak
Then replace the objects_server.zip with your back up, so you can play online again.

Re: Helicopters are too unrealistic
Ok everyone just noticed this whole thread on PR flight physics etc... Basicly heres the bottom line IMO about PR flight. Its impossible to 100% accurately simulate the flight physics of an actual Blackhawk helo with the bf2 engine. I have never been that much of an in-game pilot when it comes to vbf2 or PR because flying with buttons pretty much sucks and I never bought a nice realistic flight cyclic. I just recently purchased one and I am setting it up tonight to do some technical data flying to settle this once and for all. I am taking into consideration engine limits vs RL flying experience/handling, takeoff rate of climb, deceleration, level flight speed, handling etc...
I will also test vbf2 vs PR vs POE2 in all aspects of flying. I will give an honest and unbiased evaluation in order to create the absolute most accurate flying physics possible for PR....
The most important to me is gonna be Rate of Climb and Level Flight Speed. Handling is more complicated because of the bf2 engine limits compared to actual fly-by-wire controls used in todays helicopters.

Hm.. I always thought that the Littlebird was pretty alright, but i guess im just used to itRobert1983nl wrote:Well to me it seems a LOT faster in PR. Especially choppers like the little bird. But i would agree, Merlin is deffinately the best chopper in PR handling wise.
And thanks for the song names

I don't know if community members have already informed the devs about how choppers handle, but the way they do now, is totally unrealistic.
I'm not familiar with POE2 either.
What I meant about the slopes: In reality, when you're on a slope you'll first get the helicopter horizontal, then you lift. This is however impossible in PR. You'll never get it horizontal in PR, so you'll takeoff sideways, often flying into trees etc.

Re: Helicopters are too unrealistic
Part of the reason why you may think some choppers fly too fast in PR is your altitude. The closer you are to the ground, the fast it seems you are going. Try using objects to the far left or right of you to gauge your speed more accurately.

No, you just misread my post. I'll explain AGAIN: The rate of movement when you look outside of the chopper to the ground, is TOO high when it reads 800 on the HUD. It should be more like the rate of movement when the HUD reads 350-370. Get it now?
But never mind, as I said before: Speed is the most minor problem with choppers in PR right now.

by that you are saying that 800 is too high for the speed at which the ground is moving beneath you and that speed should be represented on the HUD by 350 to 370....Robert1983nl wrote:No, you just misread my post. We can not change the reading on the HUD, that is hard coded into the engine....
I dont think that is what you are trying to say but that is what your saying in your post...
